It needs to be done by someone who's certified for it. There used to be
a doc operating out of (of all places) a dental practice in Melbourn a
few years ago, but I'm guessing he's close to retirement, if not already
there. I'm up for finding out, too: I'd like to get back in the air
this year if poss.

Ask at the Cambridge Aero Club for a current list of local AMEs (yes, it has
to be an AME). There's a Dr Wallace who does them, don't know who else.

He did mine last year.
I don't suppose anyone know how much they cost...?
If you have to ask the price of the medical you can't afford the flying ...
Maybe costs the same as around an hour's flying, depends on stuff like
whether you're old enough to need the ECG.

I'm not intending on flying... :-)
Incidentally, if you don't make it through the Class 2, you can get an
NPPL medical from your own GP, and it's based on much lower criteria -
much the same as haulage drivers need, I think. Obviously, you won't be
able to have an international PPL on that, but it's better than nowt if
you have the need to sprout wings.
<www.caa.co.uk/medical> has all the current information and a "Find an
AME" link. I recently went to the CAA at Gatwick for my initial medical
(since it's 10 minutes on the train), cost £164 including ECG. I notice
the scheme of charges has been updated (i.e. increased) since then. If
you have any problems at all, give the CAA a call - they are really very
helpful.
Good tip for an NPPL medical - send your GP a copy of the form and
explanatory notes with a covering letter in advance of your appointment.
