Does anyone have any information on whether the Kings Cross to Cambridge
Sunday (train day, not calendar day) 00:06 service runs? It's on the small
timetable that was being given out at Cambridge station yesterday (marked
MM ('Monday morning') and <bus symbol> ('Bus Service')), but both the web
site (see below) and the rail enquiries telephone line say there is no
such service.

The Sunday timetables changed several times over the summer: make sure that you're
reading the correct bit of the timetable leaflet.

No.

I was on this train on Sunday, coming back from Hereford. The bus
replacement service operates from Letchworth. However, the first
Letchworth knew that the train was running was when they were phoned
by the driver of the train at Hitchin. There therefore wasn't a coach,
and we waited half an hour at Letchworth at 0100 whilst Letchworth
tried to get a coach.

Sorry, I wasn't particularly clear in my intent. I mean to say that
various timetabling services either do or do not have this train (and
bus). This isn't just a problem with the timetables because various
parts of the service provider either are or are not expecting the
train as well.

They've give up running Sunday trains to King's Cross until September
29th. Take your pick of buses from Cambridge or Whittlesford to Letchworth
or Stevenage. :-(

The subject line on this thread sparked off a thought I had recently
(they're few and far between, to be honest, so I have to encourage
them when they happen)...

It's really quite amazing how far the sound of distant trains travels
at night. I live out on Grange Road, but I'll very often hear the
chug-a-chugga sound and whistle of a goods train in the early hours of
the morning. Hence the link to the subject line - it reminded me of
all the Secret Seven stories I used to read in the 1980s, and the
thought of a ghost train passing in the dead of night :-)

Wasn't it James Stewart in 'Its A Wonderful Life' who said "Listen to that
Mary, that's the greatest sound in the world - the whistle and clang of a
train going by" (Or something pretty similar.)
I used to think that till I found out that the midnight trains through
Nantwich (where I used to live) were loaded with nuclear material and bound
for Sellafield......
These days I'm suspicious of any train that isn't on the timetable.

How do you know it's not in the timetable. Not in the _public passenger_

You've just spoilt all the romance of it for me :-/
