Was walking back from lunch in Grantchester and took a shortcut up the
Malting Lane opposite The Granta. The first cottage on the left had a dim
street light illuminated. I had a look into it and it appeared to have all
the neccessary equipment for it being gas (gas feed, possibly a pilot or
electric ignition), and also appeared to have 4 mantles lit.
Does anyone here know if it is genuinely gas powered or is a remarkably
good faux gas lamp?

I've not seen that one but there are a few genuine gas lamps which sound
just like it around that side of the city. Latham Road springs to mind.
Dunno about that one, but I believe there are several private roads in
Cambridge with gas lamps.

There's one off Chesterton High Street too, Thrifts Walk possibly?

And the odd public road, Little St Mary's Lane for example.

The one in Malting lane was real last time I looked.
Nice photo of the Willow walk one

& there's still one next to LSM

Although they were only on at night, and I do not know if it is still
so, there were gas lamps in some squares in Bayswater in London until
fairly recently.
One thought of fog, pony traps, pull-bells ringing faintly somewhere
within, capes and cold, a sinister butler, and one had got there just
after Holmes and Watson, who had already stolen most of the cutlery,
and then remembered one's appointment and snapped out of it.
And on reflection one realised why one had thought the duo possibly
somewhat light-fingered, since they had never submitted invoices for
anything they did, yet must somehow have managed to make ends meet.
And the Hound of the Baskervilles was, of course, a strain on their
budget, albeit that it loved them both very much.
Life at Baker Street:
Holmes: Watson!
Watson: Don't be silly, Holmes, you've got the TV guide.

There are gas lights in parts of Westminster, including the street where I
work. They are much brighter than any I've seen in Cambridge, though, with
6 burners or even more in some streets.

Many thanks to all - it's splendid to hear fully working gas lamps are more
common that just the one in Malting Lane, I'll look out for the others
people have mentioned.

As others have pointed out, it's real, and as far as I can tell, on all
the time. I don't believe it is maintained by the College, so could be a
public utility.

I don't know if that particular one is gas, but I have been told (by
someone who should know) that there are still some gas street lamps in
Cambridgeshire.
Have a look on Goggle for Barrow road in Trumpington they still have
them !...

There's also Millington Road.
Theo
Which is where I first saw them. Can Directors of Studies still afford
to buy houses there, today?

I think that's one of the few other examples on a public road. The great
majority of gas lights in Cambridge are on private roads. Millington Road
is another example not so far mentioned.

I am told that that area is moving away from academics and towards bankers
and lawyers. I think that means "no".
I expect the average price is well towards a million.

ISTR that Barrow road might be a private one that the public are allowed
down .. so I was told by a girl I knew there once....

Hmm. The lighting looks like the type that elsewhere was converted to
electricity many decades ago. It would have been installed by the Borough
Council as it was in those days, or maybe by a predecessor before the area
came within the Cambridge boundaries. It also leads to a bit of road with
electric lights. Compare the gas columns and those in Porson Road
converted to electricity.
I suppose it is possible Trinity own both roads.

Yes Barrow is a private road, and I presume the residents have elected
to retain the original gas lighting. Not sure how the ongoing costs of
gas street lights compare to the cost to upgrade to electric, or even
whether electric ones are cheaper to operate.
Shouldn't expect any of the residents there are -that- worried about the
cost;!..
Last time I went that way they did seem to be rather dim so might still
be gas?.
