License. Whatever. When they were on the air, they broadcast
a diverse range of sounds. The presenters were people you
knew, or if not, you knew people that knew them, even if you
didn't know it.
Eventually a full-time licence became available, and was
operated by Cambridge Cafe Radio, which had at least the
same initials as CCR, even though some of the original
campaigners appeared less than delighted with the new
station. It was a bit less zany, a bit more mainstream,
and the presenters sounded more like professional radio-
people and less like the kid two doors down.
And now we have Cambridge Red. "a breakfast show of
tunes you can sing along to". A Golden Oldies slot.
Yes, the same brain-dead unchallenging homogenised Aussie-

I think it's about time for a campaign for a community

Yeah. Even the RDS ident is a moronic "___RED____".

I remember the old CCR fondly. I spent a week with them several years ago
as part of the Summer in the City youth programme. The studio overlooking
Parkers Piece was a soundproofed partition in the front bedroom of a house
that now contains offices. The rest of the room (a desk) was their office.
I think that pretty much sums up Community Radio, or at least how
Community Broadcasting should be done.

I worked on a student radio (University Radio Falmer (sussex uni campus
radio)) that managed to avoid having adverts so the DJ's could play what
they liked, and anyone could be a DJ, you just had to pay your membership
and prove that you were competent (ie not likely to break the kit).IIRC they
were funded by a combination of subsidy from the university (ie not paying
rent on the studios), subsidy from the student union and membership fees.
They were also broadcasting using an old surplus military transmitter, but
if you are only broadcasting to a small valley that is a powerful enough
transmitter.

Have to agree with your sentiments.
I used to enjoy Cambridge Cafe Radio. Thought it was a nice name,

Cambridge Red means nothing to me (associates it with the amateurish

Cambridge _Community_ Radio has the moral rights to the name CCR.
And the moral rights to the broadcast licence. However, they've

This is cam.misc. Reality is at fault - do not adjust your newsreader.
Wake up at the back!!
Cambridge Red (TV) has just engineered a coup to assume control
of CCR.
A visit to the CCR web site will put the public gloss on the
change. If you follow the link to the Cambridge Red Radio 'site'

Not so much councillors as council officers. Don't get me wrong - I am very
happy that there are councillors out there representing the people of this
city. Done properly the job is demanding, time consuming, and pretty
thankless. Most of the councillors seem to be 'OK' (IMHO) - some seem very
good to me (ditto), some are less good (ditto). However, the system works
quite well, I think. If one party has rather a lot of crap people in it, it
will probably get voted out. If people get fed up enough they think about
standing themselves. I know I am not the first frustrated entrepreneur to do
this myself!
I have a great deal of respect for those councillors who do their jobs
properly, do not envy them, and hope that they do not take anything I have
to say about 'the Council' personally.
I would love to be able to speak as positively about Cambridge City Council
officers. It may be that the majority are 'OK', etc... However, my
experience (albeit rather 'narrow') has been very different. The situation
is, perhaps, best summed up by the labour councillors and ex-councillors who
talk about there being four parties in Cambridge - the three obvious ones
and the 'officers party'. What they mean (and, in fact, the ex-councillors
are often quite open about this) is that in practice the officers have a lot
of control over the policy decisions of the City Council. Some will even go
so far as to say that the Council is 'run' by the officers. This has been my
experience with the Department of Environmental Health and Protection.
Towards the end of last year Roger Coey[1] and Sharon Davidson [2] told me,
quite emphatically that (I quote):
'We're not having those things operating a taxi service. We're not having
people rolling out of the pubs into those things. If we wanted more taxis
we'd issue more hackney carriage licences.'
I can't remember which of them said which words, but they were in very clear
agreement. They do not deny saying this either [3].
My response was to say something like 'well, we'll see what the members have
to say about these points (i.e. where trishaws could go, at what times,
etc...) and moved on to avoid unuseful conflict. To cut a long story short
[4], the members *did* agree with me on most points, but the officers then
ignored most of what they had said.
I have a problem with the officer party - I can't vote them out! However, I
am using the courts [5], the complaints procedures [6] and a petition to the
next full council meeting [7] to try and get something done about this
highly undemocratic state of affairs.
Simon Lane.
[1] The Head of Environmental Health and Protection
[2] The Public Control Licensing Officer
[3] I quoted them as having said this in a complaint I made earlier this
year. Their response did not deny using this type of language.
[4] My website (www.cb1.com/trishaws) has (not very up to date)
information. There is detailed information in posts entitled 'DEHP
Maladministration' and 'Trishaws - again! (long)' made to cam.misc - you can
find there with the (ever useful) Dejanews (www.dejanews.com).
[5] I have a case going 'up' to the Lords this week. It should come 'down'
again two weeks from then. I'll then know if they are prepared to hear the
case fully.
[6] So far I have been using the Council's own internal ombudsman service.
If she can't or won't sort things out I'll go to the (external) Local
Government Ombudsman. I am trying to keep an open mind as to how effective
these are likely to be ...
[7] I handed in a 506 signature petition yesterday. This buys me 5 minutes
to speak at the next full Cambridge City Council meeting. Unless, of course,
they (officers again) find some reason why I shouldn't be allowed to present
it (this is not uncommon).
The word "file" is superfluous.
HTH, HAND, etc..
Ah....*all becomes clear*
I won't comment on cam.misc.

AIUI although it's on the Sandy Heath transmitter it's not broadcast in
the Cambridge direction to avoid interfering with the radiotelescopes.
I have heard there is to ba a repeater on the Comberton radio mast
sometime, which is past the radiotelescopes so won't interfere with them,
but when that might happen I have no idea and won't help those between
Sandy and Comberton.

As you are already aware plans have been made to transmit Channel 5 from
Madingley in order to improve reception for Cambridge residents. However,
the
original date for our launch (mid-October) has been delayed as we are
waiting
for frequency clearance from the Belgians. Unfortunately a new date has
yet to
be decided.
When we do go into service you can find us by tuning in to channel 34.
Thank you for the interest you have shown in Channel 5. I hope that this
answers your query and that we will be able to welcome you as a viewer

Our house is on the High Street in Sutton and we usually get it well, but it
is still known in the family as The Land Where It Always Snows as, to start
with, we were tuned to the weaker of the two frequencies on which it is
available in this area.
Had I known this posting was going to turn up today, I'd have got precise
tuning information from the video repair man yesterday<g>. Channels 95-ish
and 99-ish sound familiar, but the point is that trying away from your usual
tuning frequencies might locate a stronger signal, especially in the city.

Channel 5 may have some crappy programs, but you can't fault their sense of
humour.

I get a usable (but not desparately good - although accurate enough for
teletext reception) signal from Stowmarket on Ch. 35 (ISTR) although I doubt
if the signal strength / lie of the land will make that any good in the
centre of Cambridge unless you point an antenna straight at it...

Yep, that's the old Howard Mallett - hidden under a lot of new smoked glass
but still the same concrete & glass shed. I cycle past it most mornings and
it's still really sad to see a venue which was originally a community
resource turning gradually into something else. I remember rehearsing &
training there on a regular basis - and we even held two Cambridge Juggling
Conventions at the centre. AFAIK the County Council sold it off because they
were skint.
Having heard that Cambridge Red TV sometimes have trouble getting enough
viewers so that they can run their phone-in video game (which I think is still
on), I wonder how exactly they're going to fill up the Mallett?

Their webpage lists their schedule, and the phone-in video show looks
quite long, so they probably have to fake it. Desperation for ideas to
fill up the airwaves has come in the form of the Red Interlude, a half
hour programme which is simply a live feed from one of the city centre
CCTV cameras.

Are you sure it's live? I once left the box on Red for half an hour
while I was cooking; it showed the rail station all through that time,
but in the daylight (it was dark outside at the time). I conclude
then, either that it's recorded, or that I was watching a repeat(!).
[I had no idea that it was a named programme, though - I assumed it
was simply a novel alternative to showing a test-card or a "Sorry
we've buggered the kit, we'll fix it soon" notice.]
Is it live? It's always been recorded when I've watched.
I wish I had the time - I'd try to come up with programme ideas and
become a local celebrity. (-:

If you knew when it was recorded, and from which camera, you could put

place at the right time. To get around the lack-of-sound situation,

I believe the only live programmes are on during the week between 5pm and
8pm (a "show" called imaginatively 528), and from 8.30pm to 11pm/12pm. The
rest of the time, including week-ends it's all recorded (repeated) stuff.
The train thing (yawn) is usually on between 8pm and 8.30pm (aaaah, the
tension and suspense as the 5.45 from Kings-Cross pulls into the Cambridge
station...) .
It's possible that things on at the moment are all repeats while their move
from Cottenham is going on...
