what's the best alternative to Maplin for buying components, cables,
torches, this that and other electrical bits and bobs for around the house?
Given that Maplin on the whole seem to sell cheap shoddy things that
break too easily, I am looking to stop using them altogether.

H. Gee on Mill Rd. Some of it will be similar cheap shoddy things, but
you will be paying a fraction of what Maplin charges.
Gees on Mill road. Although if you want non shoddy you're back in the
realms of the internet or RS

I third Rapid Electronics based in Colchester. I have been using them
since 1992 and they were even cheaper than Maplin then.

Hmm, it looks as though this:
http://www.rapidonline.com/searchresults.aspx?style=0&kw=86-2936
is the same as this:
http://maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?moduleno=29393
I certainly wouldn't pay Rapid's price of 9 for this, as I would expect
it to be absolutely crap. Maplin charge 20 for it.
The one I bought broke the first time I tried to charge it up (one week
after I got it) because the contacts in the charger socket appeared to
break when the charger was plugged in.
So, at least Rapid have cheap prices for cheap shit.

I really don't like their policy on recycling; "we make a donation but
don't take stuff back" [so that's alright then] and they don't recycle
batteries but said "we'll chuck it in the bin for you" - CCC specifically
state not to put batteries in with general refuse. I was so piqued on one
occasion (I had a whole bunch of different dead batteries to replace and
took them with me to ensure correct replacements) when they said throw
them away we don't care, I wrote to Maplins HO. Got a nice letter back,
but nothing has changed when I was there last...and I think that will be
my last time too.

Naich,
Thank you for correction!

Do any shops recycle batteries? I've certainly not seen any advertising
the fact.

Apparently they will shortly:

It seems to be rather a non-sequiter to presume that recyling alkaline
batterys will reduce lead cadmium & mercury in the landfill.

Waitrose has a battery recycling bin - it's not with the other
recycling, but just by the main store entrance.

Nowadays you can take the batteries across the road from the Cambridge
Maplin's and use the battery recycling point in Mandela House reception.

As does Budgen's and the Council Customer Access Centre at Mandela House.
I have seen Curry's on Newmarket Road (IIRC, the electrical place next to
PCWorld anyway) have a receptacle on their counter too.

Coming soon rather than here now.

That's impressively bad, not only for its bizarre sense of where places
are on the map but also ignoring all three City Council-sponsored banks
already mentioned in this thread.

Odd, I was there before Xmas and didn't see one. Perhaps I just wasn't
looking. Where is it located exactly?

...you can?....OK now I've come to think about it, I was talking about the
one in the Beehive - is there anywhere near there? There's no battery
recycling point round the back with teh rest of the recycling bins, which
always struck me as odd...what with (the other) Maplins beside it. Is it
possible to lodge a "can we have a battery recycling point" request for
this area please? ( A dead electrical equipment facility would be even
better)

Facing the main desk it's against the back wall to your right. Green bin,
smaller than a wheelie bin.

Arbury Court. Sorry, I forgot there were others.

I'm not aware of any facility on the Beehive site but any of the
electrical retailers could do their own thing I suppose.

Indeed, and the places that are listed seem pretty obscure to me.
I was also a little surprised to find that when I inadvertently typed in
'Cambridge' rather than entering a postcode, I got a map of Cambridge,
Massachusetts.

My bet is it will be like the WEEE scheme for old electrical appliances.
Many stores simply avoid having to take back your old appliances by donating
to the running costs of council recycling centers...and they already take
batteries.
That's fine except out nearest center is a long way away and a round trip by
public transport would take a week as we only get one bus a week.
