This relates to 'STEM' graduates (http://www.dhs.gov/ynews/
releases/20120511-expanded-stem-degree-programs.shtm - now
expanded to cover all kinds of odds & sods).
The loophole: Start a Master's degree from a US Univ
(12 months, trivial), concurrently apply for H1B visa, and start work,
has existed for several years...
Now it looks like this will be simplified, so that such grad.
students can proceed immediately to 'Green Card' and concurrently work-
no H1B nonsense.
(The cause for this is that Hispanic immigration has now reached
landslide proportions, the US will be 50% non-white by 2042, &
Republicans have panicked).

What I can't understand is why anyone would actually want to do this.
The US is a backwards country with a broken political system, run by
anti-science anti-intelectuals, with an economy that only survives
because it is used as a reserve currency by other countries for
historical reasons. I wouldn't want to live there for all the tea in
China.

The US is quite a big place; some parts of it are really rather
pleasant. I am with you in preferring Europe, but I know a LOT of
people who are very happy in the US of A (and they look after
academics a darn site better than in the UK).

well, thnks for reply--agreed there is anti-science in Tenn., etc, &
the Religionists
are a perishing nuisance w. their birth control/abortion/stem-cell
obsession.-- but for the next 30-40 yrs, we will live on most
agreeably--- prudent Brits & their children/grandchildren must take
pains (not too expensive, but too long to describe..) to preserve
their Dual citizenship--
(even if you have to give up Brit, Cit. temp. for Govt employee/
contractor purposes...).
Regard the US (partic. the East Coast) as a convenient adjunct for
Brits in Science, Medicine, Law etc; the Republican Hispanic-vote
panic won't go away, & pays off for all of us. I wld be v interested
to hear accounts from more recent emigrants, e.g. my College mag
(Jesus) is about 30% devoted to this.

To people who know nothing, anything is possible.
To people who know too much, it is a sad fact
that they know how little is really possible -
and how hard it is to achieve it.

Permit me to ramble on -- We are doing our best;

(Posted to v active Atheist Grp, No.Va): "V.impressed by this [Atheist] grp's handing out flyers at Metro....God be with you....
The US's residual looniness (the dregs of Religionist immigrants & brainwashing over 300 yrs) -- Stem Cell, Abortion, Contraceptives, Public display of 10 commandments, Pledge of Allegiance etc --- is correctly a source of hilarity from more realistic countries like the UK. "

Unfortunately we need these people for more important issues like preserving Eurocentric values in the US for a few decades longer. Even the Tea Party & Romney have been suckered in..
[so we ex-pats just lie back --collect our paychecks & think of England)

Old arch racist doing fine. How you?
England will go <50% white around 2070 (see my pioneering paper in 2008, now correctly confirmed by all), led by Diane Abbott & her ex-City of London School son.
Indeed, the US will go <50% white by 2027 (ie Hispanic); we are now right in the throes of dealing with this (see Supreme Court decision next week). Further comment & discussion unnecessary & inadvisable. Our hearts shall go on.
