Assuming it doesn't reopen any recommendation for a no-frills gym? I
don't need a pool, just some weight machines and treadmill sort of
stuff. Fitness/yoga classes nice but not essential.
Thx
That's hardly news, it's been going downhill for months. I can remember
going in there earlier this year to join and it was pretty clear it was
in trouble. The old JJB now
http://www.dwsportsfitness.com/locations/fitness-club.php?id=119
is reasonbly priced so why not go along there, not far from the Atrium
and actually functioning.

Most of the gyms in and around Cambridge are struggling. The change of
name was part of an earlier takeover. You could do worse than join the
Kelsey Kerridge gym (Outlooks) http://www.kelseykerridge.co.uk/
I declare an interest as Trustee of the Cambridge Sports Hall Trust (the
charity that runs the KK).
Max Boyce.
Indeed. The fact that the phones have been disconnected for the last
month was certainly a clue. But one lives in hope...
Thanks for the tip on JJB.
A number of people just jog around Coldhams Common at ungodly hours of
the morning, along Coldhams Lane, across the common and the railway
bridge, or via Newmarket Road and Whitehill Road and you've got acres of
damp grass to run around, avoiding the dog walkers, for no cost
whatsoever. Whatever floats your boat.

Might be more to do with lack of spending money and the fact that loads
of gym memberships are frivolous purchases that never get used enough.

Other relatively cheap options: the gym at Fenners (maybe only available
if you're a member of the university). The gym at the Leys school
(although you can't use it in the middle of the day).

But running is not what you join a gym for!
I do have sympathy with your point tho'... if you don't really know what
you want other than to "get fit" then a bit of running and cycling is
fine, and costs very little compared with a gym membership.
Sadly that closed last week, their lease ran out, I live nearby and can
confirm that that part of the building is now unused, I walk past it on
a daily basis.

Very sadly indeed: Dave ran a great gym for people that don't like gyms.
He'll be missed.

Isn't lack of custom why all gyms close? Or are you saying it wasn't
lack of custom?

It wasn't lack of custom, it was a very popular place. As I heard it
from Dave, the lease had been under threat for a while (the whole row of
buildings is owned by a property developer) and was on a rolling
short-term basis. Dave needed to redecorate & refurbish and upgrade his
equipment, but understandably wasn't willing to put in this investment
when the lease situation was so unpredictable. He decided to make a
clean break rather than limp on as it all got tattier.

Paul, I am running about 30 miles a week at the moment. Finding a free
place to run is not a problem - see also Anglesea Abbey, Coton,
Clayhithe, Grantchester, etc etc.
The reason I use a gym is for the weight machines and yoga/pilates
classes that help to keep the necessary body parts in some semblance
of working order. The only time I have ever used a treadmill is when
there's snow on the ground.
At the moment the problem I'm having is that all the gyms want to
charge me for a swimming pool which I have no desire to use, it being
more a form of sensory deprivation than a form of exercise.
Alright then, check out the martial arts gym just opened along Harvest
Way opposite the allotments, parallel to Newmarket Road, just around the
corner from Discount Auto parts. Don't know what they charge, can't be
a lot, they've got a pretty basic setup.

Buy some free weights and a bench and do it all yourself?
I thought that was short life property with plans for a hotel recently
agreed?

Well he can use it in the interim. Anyway Eastern Court is still in
place and unless you have some firm evidence to the contrary I haven't
heard that the Travelodge has been got planning permission as yet. Also
the gym is not on that corner it's along towards the CRT site and I am
not aware that the TL is going to take that entire strip.
