I had an interesting p1p1 decision last night and wondering what others would have taken. Here are the relevant cards:

Prepare to Fight
Temmet
Merciless Javelineer
Crocodile of the Crossing
Magma Spray

I could probably make an argument for any of the cards I think. So, what would you pick?

The multicolor cards are not powerful enough to entice me P1 P1. Prepare//Fight is quite a brutal combat trick that comes with a little extra value later on that can change the way the opponent has to play.

If this was FNM I might take croc since it's pretty powerful and I haven't gotten to draft the counters deck yet. That being said day 2 of a GP I'm easily taking magma spray happy that I'm not passing any good red cards. (And hope the color isn't over drafted)

Yeah, the thing about a first pick is that it needs to be a powerful enough card to automatically make it into the deck if you're in the right colors but still be something you don't mind abandoning if the color isn't open, and the fact that multicolor cards require two colors is a pretty huge commitment. That being said, I'm going to disagree with Rich and say that I'm slamming the Spray.

Yeah but not at FNM. I'm slamming the Magma Spray regardless because I can't seem to 3-0 a draft in this format unless I'm playing red.

Trevor you said you are slamming rhe spray but haven't 3-0... maybe reds not your color j/k;)  I have 3-0 this format twice and every time i was GU splashing red or black for removal .  Green has the best efficient creatures that can come down early to slow down aggro builds.  I have a small sample of drafts but this is my take.

Wow, very nice. All in all, May through September is a decent batch.

I don't think there's any question that you take a mono color card. It's so close that I'd like to know the remaining contents of the pack, surrounding player preference, and if anyone at the table is missing a leg or carries a Bowie knife.

I like Crocodile over Spray but it's personal preference. I'd rather not fight and be the third or fourth red drafter at the table, and I'd consider the chances of that being higher than someone opening a green rare in front of me.

Yea, I have to agree with most of what everyone else is saying.  None of the multicolored cards are good enough to first pick over something as good as Crocodile or Spray.  That being said, I think I have to agree with Jason.  Red is definitely one of the most sought after colors in this format but one of things that I have found difficult to deal with is a solid G deck that just curves out with the big creatures.

I've been thinking about it and I might just take Magma Spray. It's very hard.

For what it's worth I think Magma Spray is a better card. But I just think about everyone else taking red cards and me getting all the Hooded Brawlers and black and green Cartouches.

I'm with you on that.  I think G is a deeper color than R (though not better) and having access to all of those things you just mentioned makes me very happy.

I'm in basically the same camp. At a GP I'd be taking the Magma Spray most likely, but for an unimportant draft I'm tired of drafting the RW and RG decks, so I went with the Javelineer. p1p2 had another crocodile in it, so that was obviously the correct pick because getting those back-to-back would have been insane. :)
