For those who haven't heard about it: http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/feature/store-play-evolves-2017-07-16

Our play programs are constantly evolving, and our next round of changes takes effect with the launch of Ixalan.

And here's a thoughtful article on why Wizards made these changes, and what they might have overlooked: http://magic.tcgplayer.com/db/article.asp?ID=14055&writer=Corbin+Hosler&articledate=7-18-2017

Wizards looked at the problem present in local game stores, developed what they believe are good solutions to that problem, and took steps use the only lever they have – promos – to signal to players which event is “for them.”

What do you think? Do these changes make you want to play more Standard? Does it make no difference for what and how you play? Do they make you want to play less...?

Do the changes make you think about what kind of player you are?

I know what kind of player I am...this doesn't change that. I'm a filthy casual that loves limited. I doubt I'll ever build another standard deck in my life, but that was true before this. I basically use my FNM promos as trade fodder anyway, so it's not gonna change my playing habits. All that said, I don't think this is a positive change for our little ecosystem.

Meh. I don't play standard because it's too expensive to build a deck that I'm going to play half a dozen times, if that. Getting foil tokens and lands instead of actual cards doesn't exactly seem like an improvement no matter how much Wizards claims that people have been clamoring for "more venues in which we can give these out" or "more ways to get promo lands through play". Give me a promo Tropical Island and then we can talk. A promo Mountain from some artist that I don't care about? No thanks, I'd rather have the foil Serum Visions or whatever.

Foil tokens are better than promo Fortune's Favor, but way worse than promo Fatal Push. I think it's a negative change, but doesn't have an affect if I were to go to FNM or not.

A promo was never really the reason I went to FNM but after seeing the full art cryptic commands I would be tempted to try standard since the prize is rare and valuable. That said I started back in RTR and most of the promos were mediocre at best and standard too expensive for me to justify building a deck. I'm still going to play limited and League play sounds interesting but I also understand that good promos are what drive standard players and substituting promos for tokens rather then adding tokens to the prize pool seems like a poor move.

Re: Cryptic Command

Did you see a list of these promos published somewhere?

Personally, my feelings about Standard are I could see getting in if and only if the value proposition is positive (earn a playset of full art Cryptic Commands, spend $50 on some budget list). I could also see these changes leading to me playing approximately zero sanctioned matches after the Fatal Push FNM promo.

I enjoy drafting (less so Standard), but less time to play, worse sets (exert exert exert), and now weaker rewards combine to push me to MODO or nothing. If I'm trying to calculate my expected value, maybe I already have one foot out the door. I don't think that Wizards wants players who are running value propositions attending local events at shops; they want players who have fun and buy packs.

Yeah, the promos have basically zero impact on whether or not I'll play. If I have a free Friday night and feel like it then I go draft.

Re: Re: Cryptic Comand

They are not printing full art Cryptic Command as a promo. I should have been clearer that I was speaking hypothetically since wizards in the past did offer full art Cryptic Commands from participating in a number of DCI tornaments.

Wizards is in a tough spot because I'm fairly certain they cannot actually acknowledge the secondary market because then their game becomes gambling under certain state laws but they also know that players do put monetary value on their collections and have taken steps to preserve that value such as the reserved list. So they need to find non-monitary ways to get people to go to stores and buy packs through out the year and I think the promo's were a good compromise when they printed good promo's.

I kinda agree with Tom in that I go to FMN when I have time because it is something fun to do but I almost never go for standard since the cost of keeping up with standard is too high.
