I haven't counted, so maybe it's just a false impression, but is this the largest number of unplayable (or "meh") rares printed in a long time? Other than the new gods and the angel that can exile an opponent's creature every other turn, there's some pretty slim pickings at rare. While I prefer formats that aren't decided by who opens the most busted rare it seems like this is going to lead to a lot of annoying drafts - "Oh, you opened Angel of Condemnation? I opened Nissa's Encouragement, it wheeled, and it was probably the last card in the pack after I sent it on its way a second time."

On the bright side, the format *seems* like it might not be the same "never block" type of games that they were with just Amonkhet, but time will tell on that one. At least there should be fewer decks that almost auto-win if you don't happen to play a 2-drop.

I just want to open The Locust God every draft/sealed event and I should be happy.

There are some stinkers, but it's hard to say if the playable to unplayable rare ratio is off (anyone want to start a research project?).

I'm not optimistic that Hour of Devastation will promote more blocking, but it looks like we'll have fewer vanilla power/toughness exert bonuses. In their place we'll have Afflict, which will make defensive trades feel pretty bad.

If more commons like Magma Spray and Compulsory Rest are revealed, then we might have a fundamentally different environment. Barring that, I think we're in for more of the same thing.

You may be right about the format. I'm probably just being overly hopeful - that's the optimist in me. It just seems that with fewer vanilla exert creatures and with fewer red cartouches and Ahn-Crop Chargers (champions? I can never remember the thing's name) that blocking might be possible. Fewer Flings too. What the set really needs is Ambush Viper. Maybe Tanner would show up at FNM?

Speaking of flash... is it just me or does it seem like Ramunap Hydra should have flash instead of either reach or vigilance? The thing is literally coming out from hiding in the sand. Seems like flash to me.

Hmmm...I like reach on a green creature. But vigilance is out of place, and I agree that flash would make a nice Ambush Hydra. I'm pretty sure "Ramunap" is an anagram for Ambush something. I will now misplay this card at the prerelease. Thanks.
