This forum, open to all, is to discuss the proposed Caltrain Service
cuts and fare increases.

See the synopsis of cuts on Caltrain's website at
http://www.caltrain.com/about/News/Caltrain_Holds_Community_Meetings__Possible_Fare_Increase_Service_Suspensions.html

The service cuts under consideration are...

Elimination of Weekend Service
Elimination of Gilroy Service
Elimination of late night and early AM service.

I have started a petition to ask Caltrain to change weekend service to
bullet service.

Note that Caltrain has community meetings scheduled to discuss the
cuts/fare increases/etc... on Thursday August 19.

With the exception of Gilroy, the meetings will take place from 6 p.m.
to 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 19 at the following locations:

* San Francisco: San Francisco Caltrain Station, 700 4th St.
* San Carlos: Caltrain Headquarters, Auditorium, 1250 San Carlos
Ave.
* San Jose: San Jose Diridon Station, 65 Cahill St.

In order to accommodate Caltrain riders, the meetings in Gilroy will
be held immediately after arrival of the southbound trains at 5:30
p.m., 7:07 p.m. and 7:47 p.m.

* Gilroy: Gilroy Caltrain Station, 7150 Monterey St.

A public hearing on the cuts will be held at the regular JPB meeting
time - Sept 2 at 10 AM in San Carlos at Caltrain Headquarters.

Unless they are really fighting the budget, eliminating weekend
service doesn't make sense, especially since it seems like the trains
are always packed with people that travel to and from San Francisco
and San Jose to watch sports games (i.e. Giants and Sharks fans).
Have they looked into reducing the service to just the bullet train
stops?

You know, I don't really know the answer to that question. It seems
obvious to large portions of the ridership, but Caltrain staff seems
to be disconnected from the ridership - see:"How hard it was to get
more bike space". They added more bike space finally, and while
overall ridership is down 10%, ridership in the bike car is up 30%.
Certainly some people might have switched from walking/muni/warm
planet to taking their bike on the train, but the majority of that
increase is just new riders that naturally come along, but who have
not been discouraged from the service by repeated bumping.

If I recall, Shirley had somewhere between 2000-3000 signatures for
more bike space. If we can get into that range, Caltrain Staff will at
least have to answer questions from the JPB. Sean Elsbernd is now the
JPB Chair and is running on a "Public Transit must be improved" gambit
with his whole FIX MUNI schtick.
