Astronomy enthusiasts,

We will be hosting several public astronomy events this month.  As always, these events are free and open to all, no reservations necessary.  For more information including directions, click on the links below or visit our Caltech Astro Outreach website.

Stargazing Lecture
Mapping the Universe in Blurred Lines
Friday, November 8 @ 8:00PM (This Friday)

Line Intensity Mapping is a new technique for mapping the universe.  How does it differ from previous observational methods, and what new information will it reveal about the evolution of galaxies and the universe as a whole? Join us for a presentation discussing Line Intensity Mapping given by Caltech PhD Student Delaney Dunne at our next Stargazing Lecture.  This 30-minute presentation at a public level will be followed by an extended Q&A panel with several astrophysicists to answer your questions about space.  And the weather looks great for guided stargazing with telescopes after the presentation.  This event will be hosted at our normal location, the Cahill Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics.  No tickets or reservations required, just show up or tune in to our YouTube livestream.

Astronomy on Tap
The Lunar Standstill &
Black Holes in Popular Culture
Monday, November 18 @ 7:30PM

What is a lunar standstill and what significance has it had for humans over history? How has our understanding of black holes changed over time, and how are they depicted in popular culture?  Our monthly Astronomy on Tap series continues this month at the Dog Haus Biergarten in Old Town Pasadena on Monday, November 18 @ 7:30PM.  We will have two 20-minute presentations on astronomical topics.  We’ll hear from the Director of Griffith Observatory Ed Krupp: “Lunar Excursions Aligned with the Major Standstill Moon,” and Caltech Postdoctoral Fellow Lisa Drummond: “Singularities on the Silver Screen: Exploring Black Holes in Popular Culture.”  In addition to these public-level science presentations, there will be guided stargazing with a telescope, astronomers on hand to answer your questions about space, and astronomy-themed pub trivia with prizes.  Despite occurring at an outdoor bar/restaurant, these events are open to all ages and free to all, no reservations needed.

Watson Lecture
Matter vs. Gravity:
Listening to Colliding Black Holes and Neutron Stars with Gravitational Waves
Wednesday, November 20 @ 7:30PM

There will be a special Caltech Watson Lecture on Wednesday, November 20 featuring Physics Professor Katerina Chatziioannou  discussing gravitational waves and colliding black holes.  Unlike our Stargazing Lectures, this will take place in the large Beckman Lecture Hall in the center of Caltech's campus.  We'll be out beforehand with telescopes providing views of the heavens before Professor Chatziioannou gets into the science discussions.  For more information, visit the Caltech calendar here.
