Astronomy enthusiasts,
Thank you for your interest in Caltech Astro Outreach events. We have not updated this mailing list since pre-covid, but there has been interest in reviving it. We will use this email group about once a month to announce upcoming public education events organized through Caltech Astro. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, there are instructions at the bottom of this email message for removing yourself from the group.
Stargazing Lecture, May 10 @ 8PMFor the month of May, we will host a Stargazing Lecture on Friday, May 10 @ 8PM. This is a 30-minute public astronomy lecture taking place at our usual location on Caltech's campus. This month will feature Professor Mansi Kasliwal discussing a new star that will appear in the sky this year due to a thermonuclear explosion taking place on its surface. After the presentation, we will host telescopes for an hour of public stargazing (weather permitting) and an extended astrophysicist Q&A panel. In addition to happening in person, this event will be live-streamed on YouTube Live
here.
Astronomy on Tap, May 20 @ 7:30PM
Our monthly Astronomy on Tap series continues this month at the Dog Haus Biergarten in Old Town Pasadena on Monday, May 20 @ 7:30PM. We will have two 20-minute presentations on astronomical topics: the formation of supermassive black holes and the search for life in the ocean worlds of our solar system. These talks will be given by Caltech PhD candidate Jean Somalwar and NASA JPL research scientist Kevin Hand respectively. In addition to the presentations, there will be a telescope, live music by local rockstar Jason Achilles, and astronomy-themed pub trivia with prizes. In addition, Kevin Hand will host a signing of his new book: "
Alien Oceans and the Search for Life in the Depths of Space" with copies available for purchase. Despite occurring at an outdoor bar/restaurant, these events are open to all ages.
All of our events are free and open to all. No reservations necessary. Just show up and stay for only as long as you want. Stargazing is contingent on clear weather. Please see our website for photos of past events, directions, and more information.
If you've missed things over the course of the last few years, we've recorded many of our past lectures, and you can watch them on our YouTube channel
here.
Thanks everyone, and I hope to see you at one of our events this month!
