Astronomy enthusiasts,

This message is coming a bit late, but we're hosting several astronomy events in the next few weeks including one tonight!

Stargazing Lecture on Supermassive Black Holes: August 16 @ 8:00PM (Tonight)

After the success of last month's 100th Stargazing Lecture featuring Kip Thorne, we continue the series with a presentation by visiting professor Re'em Sari discussing "The Gigantic Black Hole in the Center of our Galaxy and the Stars Around It."   This 30-minute presentation at a public level will be followed by an extended Q&A panel with several astrophysicists to answer your questions about space.  And the weather looks great for guided stargazing with telescopes after the presentation.  This event will be hosted at our normal location, the Cahill Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics.  No tickets or reservations required, just show up or tune in to our YouTube livestream.  For more information about this evening's event, including directions, please see our website.

Astronomy on Tap: August 19 @ 7:30PM (Next week)

Our monthly Astronomy on Tap series continues this month at the Dog Haus Biergarten in Old Town Pasadena on Monday, August 19 @ 7:30PM (next week!).  We will have two 20-minute presentations on astronomical topics: "Starquakes and Stellar Surprises," and "Two Is Better Than One: Binaries Across the Universe."  These talks will be given by NASA postdoctoral fellow Catherine Clark and Caltech PhD candidate Nicholas Rui.  In addition to these public-level science presentations, there will be guided stargazing with a telescope, live rock music with Jason Achilles, and astronomy-themed pub trivia with prizes.  Despite occurring at an outdoor bar/restaurant, these events are open to all ages and free to all, no reservations needed.  For more information about this event, including directions, please see our website.

Great Basin National Park Astronomy Festival: September 5-7

Our outreach team from Caltech Astro will be assisting with the Great Basin NP Astronomy Festival in Central Nevada next month.  This annual event highlights the night sky with the darkest skies of any national park in the continuous USA due to its remoteness deep in Nevada.  There will be stargazing with telescopes, public presentations on astronomical topics, and we'll be hosting two special Astronomy on Tap events on Friday and Saturday evenings.  Come join us for a weekend of astronomy fun in Nevada.  Event is free and open to all, but you must pay for entrance to the national park.  For more information, see Great Basin NP's website.

Sequoia National Park Dark Sky Festival: September 6-8

The same weekend as the Great Basin NP Astronomy Festival, Sequoia National Park will be hosting its own Dark Sky Festival a bit closer to Pasadena.  Caltech Astro will have a contingent present at this festival giving presentations and assisting with telescopes over the weekend.  It promises to be a great event for all attendees, and is similarly free and open to all.  For more information, see Sequoia NP's website.

---

All of our events are free and open to all.  Stargazing is contingent on clear weather.  Please see our website for photos of past events, directions, and more information.

If you've missed things over the course of the last few years, we've recorded many of our past lectures, and you can watch them on our YouTube channel here.

Thanks everyone, and I hope to see you at one of our events this month!
