This past Saturday the Santa Cruz Randonneurs hosted their Lobitos Creek 200k brevet. It is a challenging route that explores the coastal hills and redwood forests that lie between Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay. The skies were overcast most of the time and the temperatures on the cool side, but the participants all reported having a good time and enjoying the course a lot. Happily, the forecast rain held off until after the last rider got back to Santa Cruz.
We had a wide variety of entrants; among the 20 starters were 12 men and eight women, and their ages ranged from the 20s into the 70s. For some, it was their umpteenth brevet, but for others it was their first. It was especially nice to have PCH Randonneurs RBA Kerin Huber join us too. Three riders did the event solo, but the others rode in groups and seemed to enjoy their long day in the saddle together. In the end, one rider DNF’d but 19 others earned their brevet -- chapeau! All in all, it was a very good day of long-distance cycling, and a rewarding way to begin our 21st season of randonneuring in the Monterey Bay region.
