It's been a long wait. Fingers crossed this holds (or the coastal hillsides, that is) for a complete throughway on Hwy 1/PCH through Big Sur.
Santa Cruz Randonneurs have their Cali Central Coastal (3C) 1,000km brevet scheduled for May 30th. When the coast is clear, take it.

A damaged section of Highway 1 in Big Sur, closed for three years, will reopen Wednesday (14 January 2026), once again allowing people to drive through one of the most spectacular sections of the California coast.
Big Sur’s rugged landscape presents challenges for maintaining Highway 1, and the roadway there requires near-constant upkeep. But Wednesday’s reopening will mark a major milestone for a community whose residents and businesses have struggled without a key lifeline.
“It’s a definite reopening, barring something unexpected happening,” Big Sur Chamber of Commerce President Kirk Gafill told the Chronicle. “For the first time in three years, there will be through-traffic between S.F. and L.A. on the Big Sur coast.”

Yes, were cautiously optimistic now — hopefully no major storms in February!

A few days ago we rode a self supported bikecamp tour from Williams Hill campground over Naciemento Ferguson to Plaskett Campgounds.  All the roads and campgounds were pristine.  We did note a lot of signage prohibiting road side camping the entire way.  I expect a lot of traffic enforcement.  Can’t wait to ride it again.

I'm not familiar with the campground locations. Is Naciemento Fergusson Rd open all the way from the coast to FHL?

Yes, Mike, my understanding is that Nacimiento Fergusson Road (NFR) is open all the way between the coast and FHL. (It has been open for some time, post wild-fires and winter storms about a year or two ago.) More recently, the big slide north of NFR is what made that region so inaccessible from Carmel and Hwy 1. Hwy 1 is now open — yay! (And the SCR 3CR 1000k is on for late May, so too the Carmel Valley Double Century in August that will climb NFR.)

Yes, I rode Naciemento Ferguson road last weekend both ways from the coast to Lockwood/Jolon through Hunter Ligett Army base.  There are two campsites along NF road (Naciemento and Ponderosa both with bathroom and water spigots.  Roadside camping is now banned along NF per new signage. The road is in good road tire bike shape.
