WhenI plug my WD Passport Ultra 4TB external hard drive WDBBKD0040BBK-0A (with 2TB of family photos) into my MacBook Pro it has fast flashing of light and can't be mounted. It can be read on a Windows laptop (after Windows automatically fixed an error). I tried opening up Disk Utility on my Mac, but it just spins forever trying to mount the external hard drive. Nothing ever shows up on Disk Utility.

The WD Passport Ultra was plugged into my MacBook on battery. I was not actively reading or writing to the external hard drive, but it did have a list of directories open (no individual photo files, but just the directory names). The battery ran out.

When I charged up my Mac again it says that the disk was not ejected properly. Ever since that my WD hard drive has the flashing problem and can't be mounted on my Mac. I tried changing the Mac laptop, changing the USB cord, same problem.

I then plugged in my WD hard drive to a Windows laptop. It says that it detected an error and had the option of automatically fixing it. I clicked "Start" and let it ran, but it didn't have a progress bar and just had a "Cancel" button. After running for 3-5 minutes, my mom came in and unplugged the external hard drive forcefully (I yelled at her for doing that). We tried plugging it into the Windows laptop again, and my files and photos could be read!! But it still can't be read on Mac and has the flashing problem.

I'm asking because I have had accidentally unplugged other WD external hard drives without ejecting in the past while not writing data, like in this case, but the drives never broke. What is up in this case?

I'm curious if this is something that happens a lot or if it's just a less durable hard drive I got. Because I'm at a point where WD's warranty can give me a new drive to replace it, or I can fix this drive myself. (I have copied the photos out to a new drive on a Windows machine.) Because if it is something that happens with the same frequency in all drives, shouldn't I just fix it?

This happens because OSX "forces" a disk check/repair in the background before mounting the drive (since it was ejected improperly), so it will simply appear to not be mounting until that completes. It seems it was fixed for you when you let the check complete---A quick way to "fix" this is to manually force quit the fsck process from activity monitor.

As you have backed up the photos on the windows machine, you should try to use disk utility to fix your drive. There might be a volume mounting error or a format error, which can be fixed by using a function in disk utility called "first aid".

As you can see, this column has both internal and external drives listed there. Be extremely careful, do not tamper with the internal drives. Go over the list very carefully and select your external drive. It should be fairly obvious which one it is. In your case it should be labeled as something similar to WD passport ultra. If not, you can look at the storage capacity and check if it matches with your disk's (here, 4TB).

Next you need to run first aid. A self explanatory button placed towards the start of the row on the top says first aid. Click and let the magic happen! If it doesn't start right away, you may have a different version of macOS. In the case of this, click on verify the disk. Next, click on repair.

At first i tried to run First Aid on Mac's Disk Utility. But it didn't work. I unplugged the WD external, shut down my macbook pro, restarted it again, ran First Aid on Mac's Disk Utility again and finally it worked! It took about 5-6 min and my hard drive showed again :)

Plug in the drive, right click the drive in Explorer, select Properties, and then in the Tools tab you'll find "Error-checking". Click "Check Now" and let it scan the whole drive fixing any errors it finds.

I tried all the above, stressed for one afternoon, and then, from disk utility, clicked on the blue eject button on the top of the dialog box. Didn't ejected, but when I clicked then on the unmount and mount button. It mounted and appeared in my finder! ouf!

I had the same issue and went to the disc utility and did pretty much what Haroon, above, did-clicked on the eject button. It said it could not eject because the files were being used, so I tried repair and it looked like everything was fine, so I hit eject again and it still wouldn't unmount. I then went out of disc utility. It still wasn't there in finder, but when I pulled out the USB and put it back in-there it was!!

Hi, everyone. My WD Passport Ultra 2TB external hard drive is not showing up in explorer when I plug it into the USB port in a "normal way". I have to connect it through a "bizarre way" to make it show up in explorer. I realizes there were threads related to the same issue, but it's not what I am looking for.

I have another 1TB WD (same model as my 2TB WD) which behaves in a "normal way". Just plug and play. Nothing weird! Once I connect it, the LED blinks for a few times for successful connection. Done. I can find it in explorer

The 2TB WD behaves in a "bizarre way". If I connect it in the "normal way", it will not show up in explorer, Diskpart, or Disk management no matter how long I wait. In order to make the 2TB WD to show, I have to process the following steps every time I connect this 2TB external hard drive: First, plug in the USB cable halfway through any one of my desktop computer's USB ports. Then, wait for the drive to show up in explorer. Finally, I can push the USB completely into the USB port. The difference is that the successful connection of the 2TB WD happens when the USB cable is half way into the USB port.

For future visitors: Looks like the post had helped some people having the same issue. I just leave it at that. Please read other comments as well because you may find the surprised solution just for you. Thanks everybody for participating in discussion.

Hi, I assume that you do not have access to another WD 2TB HDD to compare to prove whether the problem is with the drive or with your PC? Have you tried connecting it to a powered hub to see if your PC is not supplying enough power to it?

I'll give it a try. Thanks for the link. Just to clarify. That 2TB drive was OK before. It became to act strangely just about 2 weeks ago. I just worried that would be a sign of complete breakdowns coming.

Suggest then if possible back up everything that you can when you do have access just in case. After that try using the 12V adapter power connector to see if it stabilizes as per connection/appearance in Explorer.

It still may be a compatibility issue between your PC and it due to perhaps component variations due to age (slightly less voltage supplied etc - all this is guessing of course as you say it is OK with other computers)

Thanks for troubleshooting. I have no clue on USB circuitry, but this seems to be the most proficient and logical diagnostics. USB 3.0 is backward compatible with USB 2.0. Probably its physical design aspects of what you are describing is what cause the issue. Nice to know USB 2.0 pins are upfront. Thank you.

The most easiest way I discovered when encountered same kind of problem with my passport. in Control Panel go to Devices and Printers. That would be the only place you can see your passport visible. open its properties and then open drivers, simply uninstall it, come out unplug your passport drive. Restart your computer and insert/plugin your passport again into PC. It will automatically start installing drivers and here you can start using your passport drive comfortably.

I am trying the same method But when i open the device and printer (as the WB HDD is connected every thing freezes) after 10-15 mins the device and printer opens and it shows 1 unspecified device when i click on that the control panleel freezes and i have it close it using TaskManager

just go to start menu , win 7 , computer right click , manage , then storage , find hard drive , right click over size of hard drive and assign a letter. thats it. should just work . if not unplug and try somthing else.... warning , do not format , do not change anything, I am assuming that you have data on the hard drive you do not want to loose...

(For people still visiting my thread): First, thanks PS. When my WD fails to show up in Explorer, it fails to show under Disk Management as well, so it's not a driver letter issue. For people who cannot find their WD device under explorer but it is visible under Disk Management. Please try PS's recommendation.

The real problem with all these name-brand external drives is that the USB to SATA converter is all on one circuit board with the drive's circuit board. You can't replace it or connect it internal in a PC to test or repair.

The better solution, in the first place, is to buy a standard laptop SATA HD drive or SSD and a separate case with only SATA to USB converted. If the case circuit dies drive can easily be rescued. If the drive dies replace it with a new one.

It seems that pc in general keep a tally of unsuccessful connections in the registry....this can also happen to cd/DVD drives....Try using the rear USB ports as these connect directly to motherboard.....

The partial power on trick seems to relate to 5 volt rail spin up before the computer tryies to read the existence of the device....for some reason putting the device USB in all the way means the computer has finished reading for connected devices BEFORE the drive has reached optimal spin speed in order to allow the drivers to read the device as working..This could be due to poorly defragged drive...or the computer psu already in using its full resources on other peripherals....which means the external drive takes longer to spin up than it should. So e external drives have their own power supplies for this reason.

(For people still visiting my thread): First, thanks John's detailed explanation. I've not experimented on John's answer. However, I've tried to connect via the motherboard usb port. Problem persists.
