But I think you'd be better off getting a surveillance package that runs on a PC (but still storing the footage on the NAS). Something like Blue Iris. The RN100 series has the slowest processor and the least memory of all the OS-6 platforms, I think you'd get better results hosting the package on a more powerful platform.

Out of the box users need to attach each camera to the network with a wired connection for setup. The camera is assigned an IP by your DHCP server, and from there you can access an on-board web server for configuration. One handy feature of the Axis M1011-W camera is it clones its wired MAC address to the wireless device, so you can easily assign a static IP while its plugged in, which later gets assigned to the wireless device when it attaches to your network. Once each camera was visible on our building network, we switched gears to the Netgear ReadyNAS environment.

As an add-on package for all ReadyNAS products, Netgear offers the ReadyNAS Surveillance package. Netgear supplied us with a 2-bay ReadyNAS Ultra 2 Plus, although the software is designed for any ReadyNAS system. This software installs with a single file and then stays running in the background on the NAS to record from and manage security cameras on your network.

The setup in this stage is also very easy, with the first step including finding your wireless (or wired) network camera, entering its credentials, and telling the ReadyNAS what IP address it has. With that information as well as knowing the camera vendor, the Surveillance package handles the rest of the configuration and immediately allows streaming and recording from the cameras.

Using the Netgear ReadyNAS Surveillance on a day to day basis, we positioned the two wireless cameras in our Enterprise Test Lab. With one camera aimed at our two 42U Eaton S-Series racks and one on our test bench, we were able to record activity taking place through motion activation. The camera interface can be accessed in multiple ways, including an web browser, an iOS client for both iPhone and iPad, as well as a Windows client.

The Netgear ReadyNAS surveillance add-on provides easy setup and use of up to 16 video cameras per system. For organizations who need video coverage for whatever reason, the Netgear solution is a breeze to deploy and compatible with most IP cameras on the market today.

Netgear this week signaled its intention to be a bigger part of the SMB storage business with the introduction of its first unified storage array and the addition of new capabilities to its NAS appliances.

Netgear, the San Jose, Calif.-based storage vendor known primarily as the top supplier in revenue and shipment terms in the under-$5,000 storage appliance market, this week unveiled its ReadyDATA unified storage array family, the company's first to support SATA and SAS hard drives as well as SSDs in a single appliance.

Netgear has been traditionally well-known as a provider of SOHO and prosumer storage appliances, but it entered the midrange storage market about two years ago with the introduction of its first NAS appliance with iSCSI capability.

The ReadyDATA systems scale to up to 60 drives with 180 TBs of total capacity, and they include thin provisioning, compression and deduplication of block and file data. Data stored on a ReadyDATA array can be replicated using 128-bit SSL for security purposes. The arrays also provide unlimited snapshot capabilities for block and file data.

The ReadyDATA arrays also support chargeback capabilities, Pahnke said. "This can be used by customers internally or by resellers who want to serve as a replication target for their customers," he said.

The family includes the ReadyDATA 5200, a 2U array with room for up to 12 drives. The company estimates street price with 12 SATA drives to be under $10,000. Also new is the ReadyDATA EDA4000, a 4U expansion array for the ReadyDATA 5200. They are expected to ship early third quarter.

Netgear also updated its ReadyNAS NAS appliances with software that allows them to be use as DVRs (digital video recorders) for video surveillance. Pahnke said Netgear worked with Shreveport, La.-based NUUO on the software application.
