I am history Mlitt student and have only recently started to use a kindle for research purposes. At the moment I use the loc (location) reference that is produced by the kindle in the notes text file you can download from it, that shows all your highlights/bookmarks, but I am confused as to the proper citation method as my supervisor queried if this was the standard way of citing a kindle. I have a copy of my history department style-sheet but it makes no reference to kindle editions.

According to the APA blog, the location number is actually a bad idea because it has limited retrievability. The blog also mentions that since Kindle's third generation, e-books have started to have real page numbers, you may try looking into that.

The reason for citing a page number is so the exact quote can be found in context. In an electronic book, one can just do a search and find the exact location faster than just looking for the page number in a traditional book, so I would say it is not necessary.

The majority of electronically published books offered for download from a library or bookseller will have a printed counterpart. Because of the potential for differences, however, authors must indicate that they have consulted a format other than print. This indication should be the last part of a full citation that follows the recommendations for citing printed books [...].

[...] electronic formats do not always carry stable page numbers (e.g., pagination may depend on text size), a factor that potentially limits their suitability as sources. In lieu of a page number, include an indication of chapter or section or other locator.

For such unpaginated works, it may be appropriate in a note to include a chapter or paragraph number (if available), a section heading, or a descriptive phrase that follows the organizational divisions of the work. In citations of shorter electronic works presented as a single, searchable document, such locators may be unnecessary.

I have over 1200 kindle unlimited books (since 2015) taken up space on my computer. They have all been returned, but they all still appear when I go on Amazon to order or return. Tried all I could to delete them, but cannot. Thinking I should cancel subscription, before I lose computer space.

I like to reread, and so purchasing so I can do at any time (certainly outside the 10-at-a-time limit) is much more effective for me. But I cannot seem to find a clear answer as to if there is any difference between purchasing with or without a KU subscription.

I am an affiliate for Amazon and other online retailers. That means that if you use the links on my blog to make a purchase, I may get a small percentage of the purchase price. It never changes the price you pay and I select every item I talk about on my blog!

I was editing an article a few weeks ago, and there were some references to Kindle Unlimited and its various iterations. For the purposes of fact checking, I went looking for an article that summed everything up for me but failed to find anything. I did find some blogs and references that discussed specific changes from one version of KU to another, but nothing that really laid the entire history out all in one place. So I discussed it with Ginger and we decided it would be worth putting something together.

However, the increased number of Kindle Unlimited subscribers (or, more accurately, their subscription money) soon balanced that out and kept the payout for each book that was borrowed at roughly around $2 a title.

Within a few months of KDP Select being launched, some of the issues with the original program started to make themselves apparent. The biggest was the fact that KU 1.0 (as it later became known) paid all authors equally based on each individual book that was borrowed. That meant borrowing a 5,000 word erotic short story would pay as much as somebody borrowing a 150,000 epic fantasy saga.

But this was clearly unfair to authors offering novel-length books, since a 50,000 word novel takes a significantly longer time to write than a 5,000 word short story. It also saw the rise of a ton of scams. Click farms in India and China would create dozens of Amazon accounts and enroll in Kindle Unlimited, then borrow dozens of their own books to score an unfair share of the communal fund payout.

With the number of Kindle Unlimited subscribers continuing to increase, this changed the playing field entirely. Suddenly, a 600-page epic fantasy novel would pay out five times what a 50-page erotic short would; meaning authors who focused on novels and longer books finally got a more equitable payout.

It also meant the churn of shorts slowly ceased, as money-hungry authors realized that the payout for a 50-page short was no longer worth the effort of writing them. Enterprising little buggers that they are, though, they soon found a new approach to maximizing their payouts.

In August of 2017, Amazon introduced KENPC 3.0, which was a different way to calculate page-reads and provide some sort of protection for authors who just wanted to write good books, instead of trying to stuff their releases with as much additional content as possible.

For most of us indie authors, the introduction of KU 3.0 did little to impact our earnings. However, it wiped the slate clean for many less scrupulous authors, and that slowly saw the payout for each page read normalize from a low of $0.0042 in June 2017 back to the $0.005 range.

Ginger is also known as Roland Hulme - a digital Don Draper with a Hemingway complex. Under a penname, he's sold 65,000+ copies of his romance novels, and reached more than 320,000 readers through Kindle Unlimited - using his background in marketing, advertising, and social media to reach an ever-expanding audience.

Most of the Chicago style rules for referencing print books apply to referencing eBooks e.g. how to reference multiple authors, different editions, an edited book etc. Click on "Books" on the tab above for further details.

Many eBooks now have page numbers which correlate with their print alternatives. If an eBook has page numbers then you provide those page numbers in your footnote, the same as you would for a print book. If an eBook does not have page numbers or does not have constant page numbers (e.g. in an eReader where the size of font or screen orientation can change the number of pages) then you can include a section title or a chapter or other number such as a paragraph number. If you are using a direct quote or paraphrase, be as specific as possible with the citation.

Many eBook providers now have a references/citation function that will produce a reference automatically. If you use this, make sure you check the style first, and double check the reference it creates.

*Note that for this book, the URL would be very long and the page requires a login. In this case, providing the databse (EBSCO) is appropriate. If a book can be found without a login (such as on Google Books), then provide the shortest URL possible.

Amazon assigns the ABSR of a book based on how many sales or downloads it has had over a certain period of time as compared to all other books on the Amazon market. With this, if you have an ABSR of 1000, then it means that at that point in time, there are 999 books on Amazon selling better than you. If you have an ABSR of 1,000,000, then it means there are 999,999 books selling better than you.
