  Under Pressure: What African-American Teens Aren't Telling You About Sex, Love, and Relationships
During the past two decades, the United States has made remarkable progress in reducing teen pregnancy and childbearing-problems that were once thought to be inevitable and intractable. The teen pregnancy rate has plummeted 40%, the teen birth rate is down by one-third, and both rates declined among all racial and ethnic groups. Progress has been especially dramatic among African- American teens. One incredible success story that remains largely untold is that among black teens, the pregnancy rate over the last two decades declined 44% and the teen birth rate declined an impressive 47%.
Although African-Americans have experienced the largest decline in teen pregnancy of any racial or ethnic group since the early 1990s, it is still the case that 50% of all African- American girls in the United States will get pregnant at least once before age 20. That's why The National Campaign and ESSENCE Magazine teamed up to conduct a nationally-representative survey of 1,500 African-American youth ages 13-21 to better understand their attitudes about relationships, sex, dating, parents, the media, and the overall context in which they make decisions about these issues.

 Prevention in Middle School Matters
New Data on Teen Dating Violence
A new study of 1,430 7th grade students reveals that many 7th-graders are dating and experiencing physical, psychological and electronic dating violence. More than one in three students (37%) surveyed report being a victim of 'psychological dating violence' and nearly one in six (15%) report being a victim of 'physical dating violence.' This study also found that while some attitudes and behaviors associated with increased risk for teen dating violence are pervasive, nearly three-quarters of students surveyed report talking to their parents about dating and teen dating violence. Parent-child communication is considered a protective factor that reduces the risk for teen dating violence.

The true meaning of Facebook's 'in a relationship'

The relationship status feature of Facebook appears to be central to the happiness - or not - of many romantic relationships among young people, according to new research.
The study, appearing in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking, surveyed 58 heterosexual couples -- most college-age -- who had been dating for an average of 19 months.

 Does Sex Education Keep Girls from Becoming Teen Moms?
States with more comprehensive sex education curricula have lower teen birth rates, according to a new study. However, the result appears more closely linked to political, religious, and social variations among the states. Researchers contend this does not suggest that sex education never helps prevent pregnancy; rather, the feelings of relatives and acquaintances, and access to birth control and family planning programs, could be equally influential.
"Although the teen birth rates and teen pregnancy rates are dropping year after year ... we still have disparities between states, and we have higher teen birth and teen pregnancy rates when we're compared to other industrialized nations," said study researcher Patricia Cavazos-Rehg, from Washington University in St. Louis. She added that sex education could be improved and should not only focus on contraception, but also include the consequences of having a baby. The study, 'Associations Between Sexuality Education in Schools and Adolescent Birthrates,' was published in Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine (2012;166(2):134-140).

Funding Streams for Relationship Education
 Youth Development Program
The Department of Justice's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention is accepting applications for its Field-Initiated Research and Evaluation Program solicitation, which will fund research and evaluation initiatives on education issues that relate to delinquency prevention, intervention, and prevention of child victimization.
Applications are due May 7, 2012. Learn more (PDF, 21 pages).
 Grants for Transitional Living Program and Maternity Group Homes
The Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB) will soon be accepting applications for the Transitional Living Program (TLP) and for Maternity Group Homes (MGH). TLPs provide an alternative to involving RHY in the law enforcement, child welfare, mental health, and juvenile justice systems. Each TLP must provide a safe and appropriate shelter for up to 21 months of services with adult supervision, life and interpersonal skill building, career counseling and job skills, counseling, and medical care as appropriate. MGHs provide the same services as a TLP in addition to providing parenting instructions and childcare. Other services that are offered include, but are not limited to, transportation, family planning, abstinence education and pregnancy prevention services.

YouthBuild Grants - SGA-DFA-PY-11-06
The Employment and Training Administration, U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), announces the availability of approximately $75 million in grant funds authorized by the YouthBuild provisions of the Workforce Investment Act [29 USC 2918a]. YouthBuild grants will be awarded through a competitive process. Under this solicitation, DOL will award grants to organizations to oversee the provision of education, occupational skills training, and employment services to disadvantaged youth in their communities while performing meaningful work and service to their communities. Based on FY 2012 funding, DOL hopes to serve approximately 5,210 participants during the grant period of performance, with projects operating in approximately 75 communities across the country.
