Dear Lobby Day Participant [rockstars/superstars/rabble-rousers/lobbyers], It is unbelievable to us that almost a month has already passed since an amazing two days in Sacramento, made so thanks to your energy, enthusiasm, flexibility-and powerful, raucous voices at the rally, matched by concise, neatly-boxed messages in your lobby visits. Please consider this email both a thanks and congratulations for the time and energy you invested in not just Lobby Day itself, but also your efforts overall to create a rational healthcare system in which we will be proud to work one day. And YOU/WE made a difference. Based on our tally of the surveys thus far (and there's still some of you who need to fill one out), we garnered 4 new co-authorships, 2 possible YES votes plus a bevy of promises of support. Lobby Day, as we know, is just our beginning! Many of you are the designated follow-up people with your Legislators office. Now it is time to cultivate that personal relationship, whether with the legislative aide or directly with the legislator. We've heard that a few of you have already made appointments to visit with your district office. Other ways in which you can follow up are by phone, email, letter (handwritten ones are especially powerful). Remind them of the pertinent points of your conversation, follow up on questions/comments they had for you, provide supporting documents that were requested and ask them how they are doing with "the ASK". Did they formally declare their new coauthorship or have they put SB 840 on their website yet? Remain undaunted by whatever negative response you may have received upon the first meeting; it's human nature to resist change when first presented with the opportunity (sales people know this all too well). Repetition and the personal relationship will catalyze this change, one person at a time. Lobby Day would not have happened this year without the efforts of many of you who added a special touch in some way; a surely incomplete list follows: - The UC Davis team (pre-med and med) who orchestrated an absolutely phenomenal Training Day! - The 26 Training Day breakout session leaders under the leadership of Stella delaVega - All 150 SoCal people who woke up before dawn to leave on time-and to the one person who overslept, but then drove 435 miles on his own, and beat the buses to Sac - The 'emergency response' sign-making team - The incredible dual NorCal/SoCal speaker duos of Stella & Erica; Cindy & Jen, who raised our spirits and wetted our eyes with their words of inspiration and ethos - The phenomenal scheduling work of the Appointment Team - Christina Penfield, UCI, for design and production of the 'Thank You' cards - Yasser & Tatianne for the vision of the Vigil - Gaspar Rivera, UCI, for the design and production of the "Ask me About SB 840" pins The real thank you, though, goes to ALL of us, in advance, for the work that we will continue to do in the name of true, universal healthcare for all Californians. We hope Lobby Day serves as a springboard for dozens of other actions, whether very locally at your school, in your community, or elsewhere. Broadcast your message far and wide. To that end, we will be redesigning the website in the next several weeks to serve as a repository/history of not just Lobby Day and any news coverage, but also to document any associated activities, as well as to post "how-to instructions" for following up with legislators offices, writing articles in your local papers, etc. Please pass on to us any additional press coverage, videos, etc. you come across. We will have a formal Wrap-up Conference Call on Sunday, March 2nd at 8pm (Dial-in (605) 772-3900, Access Code 1094490). Check the Google group for more info. If you haven't already joined and would like to be a leader for next year, go to http://groups.google.com/group/LobbyDay07-08?hl=en <http://groups.google.com/group/LobbyDay07-08?hl=en> We look forward to all that comes after this. With inspiration and gratitude, Parker and Renu p.s. A reminder that if you did not fill out a survey on Monday, please use the attached document, and send it to Parker (Pdu...@uci.edu <mailto:Pdu...@uci.edu> ). We're missing feedback on about 20 Legislators! (Soon we'll find you individually....)
