Believe it or not, health care is free for all in Bhutan. Our
trekking group had a chance to experience it due to falls and other
mishaps traversing 16,000 feet passes. Anything not available is paid
for by the government with patient being sent to India or Bangkok.
Students are sent free of cost to India and Thailand for school and
training, and most actually are said to return.
It's probably not as idyllic as that, but people love the King for
setting this up. In 2008, a predetermined "auspicious year", the King
is stepping down and a parliament will elected. I keep telling people
a good king is better than a corrupt democracy (Aristotle sad the same
thing a long time ago).. They are quite worried in fact, though the
likely leader is the man who established the health care system for
the King.
