Hey all!

Are there any DECENT book stores in Calgary?

I was just at Chapters up in the NE (Sunridge area) and it's the most
pathetic example of a book store that I've ever seen!

I'm looking for books on the following subjects
- CSS & DHTML reference
- ASP reference
- ASP and databases

Thanks!

I know it's not local, but have you checked out:
http://www.halfpricecomputerbooks.ca/ ?

They're based out of BC, and they do have a decent selection of computer
books (and they're new, not used). Most importantly, even after
shipping, it's still cheaper than purchasing it from a bookstore. I've
ordered from them in numerous occasions and wouldn't hesitate to order
from them again.

Definately agree with your suggestion of Nexus.

I did check out their website. Most of the books are $20 more than I
can order elsewhere and that adds up fast!

I'm not counting them out though. If they are as well stocked as
everyone says, it might be worthwhile.

Thanks!

I'll check it out...

Wife is ready to order from Amazon.ca but I convinced her to try and
buy locally first.

I third that. They also stock linux distros, if you're looking for that.

For cheaper, more widely published stuff, the Coles downtown in Eaton's
(still called that?) Center has an upper floor full of computer books.

Try the Coles bookstore in the downtown mall.... upper floor, the
selection is pretty good and prices aren't too bad..

Hey, they even have Delphi books! Everything is too expensive though.
I stopped buying computer books and magazines long long time ago. A
lot more info, documents, source is available on the internet. Plus
most books become obsolete in 6 months.

Actually, if you buy any books over $39 from amazon.ca, you get FREE
shipping and handling. Plus, some books are up to 30% off. Before you buy at
Nexus, check out the same book at amazon.ca and do a comparison

Try Nexus Computer Books on 17 Ave SW between 3 and 4 Street, the best
computer book store in town and since Chapters and Indigo are selling less
computer books, the only store in town...

If Nexus is a good store, support a local business. Used to be a store in
Calgary called Calgary Computer Books. Great store that disappeared when
Chapters/Indigo came along. Price isn't everything. When Amazon is the
only store left that sells books, prices will go up. Support a local
business. Don't work there, don't know the owners etc.

Sad as it is...

I got most of my books locally at LONDON DRUGS. All the books were
under $20 and are current revisions.

The only book I didn't find was a WROX book "Beginning ASP databases".
It turns out that this book was published back in '99 so won't be as
relevant as others out there anyhow.

Thanks for the feedback folks!

Not terribly difficult to get a cash account and associated 10%
discount, either.

Yep, just too bad many of the authors made any $$ on those, and some were
never paid at all. Questionable legality of selling some of those books, in
fact. But bah, who cares anyway..

Jen.
