These are the people that own a "bad ass" PC and thus feel the need to
promote Microsoft's other products. Guess they feel compelled to promote
the Empire's xbox as it makes they feel like they're doing their jobs as
part of the MS Collective. Stupid drones.
Now, I am a huge fan of first person shooters and love running around
with large guns and blasting flesh away. However showing off how large
my gun is doesn't make me any more of a man. In fact I still play some
of the old classics on my Mac and I'm damn proud of these little games
since they are fun. Yet any Microsoft drone out there would love to jump
on the opportunity to claim that there are no good games for the Mac
therefore I'm stuck with 8 bit games. See what being part of a
collective does to your thoughts? Oops, I didn't mean that as a plural.
MS drones aren't allowed individual thoughts.
As for the games, I see no shame in playing what you enjoy - there are
games I get much fun from my Ps1 as well as my Dreamcast. I'd buy a new
bad ass Mac to play some of the new wicked games before I spent my money
supporting the Empire and its xbox.
Enjoy your Gamecube. No shame on it, even if it only has a tiny gun.

Seems that kids own only one of the systems, and thus badmouth the rest. I
own a dreamcast, and never heard the end of it, especially on the 'net. I
thought it was the best system, and still love it. Yet people would flame
the hell out of it, for no reason. As an adult, I own pretty much
everything. And get the good games for each system.

All the systems have blood in them. I think nintendo understands that and
is starting to come out with more 'adult' games.

I am still not sure how my girlfriend understands my games, but as long as I
limit how long I play for, she is alright. I always bug her to play with
me, or to learn how to play, which she sometimes does.

One of these days I will play Metal gear again, for like the tenth time, my

Oh and I forgot to mention that I still have an Atari 2600. Nothing
beats Moon Patrol. Popeye is another classic I love, although I suck at
it.
Yeah, xbox fans - you heard it right: Atari 2600 rules! (and you can
pick one up for like, 10 bucks)

Oh yeah, way more. When I first played half life, that was literally almost
all I could think about. If I could not pass an area I would think all day
long on how to get by. Metal of Honor AA was a simple fps, on rails! Great
scenario, but no story, or anything else. Great game though, but not even
in my top ten.
> I've been playing fps since one of the very originals came out many
> years ago (Wolfeinstein 3D)
That makes both of us 'veterans'. Wolfenstein 3D was pretty good for it's
time, and doom even better. I was playing pinball standing on a phone book
on top of a chair. I would play people for money, if there was such
gambling in this city.

Half life was considered game of the year, and the benchmark of how to build
a FPS that is not simply killing. An amazing game and story. The next one
should be out soon. You should seriously try it. I am not sure where my
copy is, but if I can track it down, you can play it (my bro' may have it).

I can actually claim to be that good with a sony controller. I do not mind
playing these games with a mouse keybored, or a controller. In fact, I find
the Dualshock controller better because it causes less stress on my wrists.
The keybored and mouse seem to hurt my hands.

Are you saying you prefer Half Life over Medal of Honor Allied Assault?
I've been playing fps since one of the very originals came out many
years ago (Wolfeinstein 3D) and the first modern day fps after that
(Marathon for the Mac) and I have never seen a game that literally gives
me the chills as Medal. I mean, it is one thing to shoot at futuristic
robots or green aliens but to be able to play a game that simulates a
WWII scenario is just too real. I loved Medal when it came out on the
Psx but Allied Assault is hardly a game, it more a war simulation that
pits you (and your large guns) against enemies that are based on
history, not sci-fi. And given the marvelous job they have done in
recreating the atmosphere in the game, it feels like you're there, in
Europe circa 1944. It's just too cool. I doubt that Half Life is half as
good.
That's another reason why I don't see the point in spending all that
dough on a xbox, when the better games are on systems. You simply can't
aim quickly enough without a keyboard/mouse combo. Sorry xbox fans, you
lose this round.

My kids just bought a Gamecube from the barginfinder and I have to admit the
graphics are incredible. They aren't allowd to play bloodspilling games
yet...and my 13 yo. son LOVES that new game Super Mario Sunshine, even
though it sounds and looks kiddy, all his friends seem to like it too.
Being a gamer from the 80's, I still find the 3D games make me dizzy and
naseous. Give me side scrolling....

I managed to convince them after several weeks of trying to buy a GC. Their
inital rejection of GC was the lack of good games, Zelda for one. But now
that they've heard that those games are coming they're pretty excited. Star
Wars Rogue Sq. looks like a neat game too, the images of the gameplay were
incredible.

I could start a museum with all my consoles. Most are packed in my dads
basement (I would have to get him to ship them, but I checked on them
recently to control rusting). The only older system that occasionally gets
used is the nintendo, to play punchout and tecmobowl, and rarely I pull out
the genesis. The Ataris, collecovision and intellivison just are not fast
enough. I am considering filling in my gaps, as these old systems go for
super cheap on Ebay. I will wait till I move into my house, since it is
sorta agreed that at least part of the basement will be used to show all my
stuff. I am planning on the old school systems to be in the washroom,
hooked to small tvs at the bar and I want to get an old table top gutted,
and have as many as I can fit (with a fan) inside. We will see how far I
can take this.

So as it turns out you're human after all. Well, if you like Moon Patrol
as much as I do, I take back some of the names I have called you in the
past - that is, till you beat me at that game.
My first console was a Collecovision but one that was compatible with
Atari 2600. One of my fave was Mouse Trap (a lot like Pac Man) but by
far my very fave was one which name I can't remember. Perhaps you guys
could help me here: it was a 2d shooter, somewhat similar to Space
Invaders but much faster action, where you'd shoot at fruits and flies
and other garden beings. If I knew the name I would look on eBay to buy
it, as I spent many a few hours of my childhood playing the thing (and
quite a few blisters too - those darn square joysticks)
For anyone in search of a great bargain, try a Dreamcast. The beauty of
it is that most units will let you play burnt games without the need of
a mod chip. And lets face it, the graphics in it isn't that far from ps2
or xbox. I'm totally hooked on Metropolis Street Racer (take that
Bernie), as it is so realistic thanks to the great physics. The graphics
are superb. And one goes for close to nothing.
Bernie, if you're serious about an Atari, for old time sakes, try either
the B Finder of Cash Converters. Not sure how that flea market thing
works, but I hear you can find stuff like that there too for very cheap.
You may even come across one at calgary.forsale. But if you spot someone
selling that 2d shooter, I want it!

Mouse? Try a trackball. I *love* the Logitech TrackMan Marble - the
one with the red-and-black marble under your thumb and three buttons.
It's the all-time best aiming controller for FPS games. It's easier
on the wrist than the mouse to boot, since you don't actually have
to move your hand around.
I do have to admit that the kb/mouse and kb/trackball combination
can get very tiring on your hands after a while though.
> 2tec ~ q3a rulez
Got that right.
> ps 125 fps r bust
Bah! Who the hell needs frame rates that high? Why,
back in my 386DX/33 days I played Doom ][ at the lowest
possible resolution (80x50 I think) at 8 frames per second
and still kicked ass.
Besides, TV screens only update 60 times per second and we
can't see the flicker, so there's no point in going higher
than that.
I like being an adult and spoiling myself. I get bored with TV, and a night
playing a game is not a night drinking in a bar. Much better for you! I
also think that if I had kids I would prefer video games over television,
since games stress many problem solving skills and interaction than simple
tv watching. Some games like Metal Gear are truly an experiance.

There are lots of good games. The new monkey ball 2 should be great for two
young brothers, and the upcoming games should be pretty great as well.
Rogue Squadron is great.
I actually got someone to evaluate how I set up my computer and desk. I am
hoping proper ergonomics can help my wrists.
Well since it seems we agree on video games, we can start calling each other
names.

I love my Dreamcast, and cleared out many bargain bins for their software.
My best was five dollar games at blockbuster. Someone got there first, but
I still walked out with nearly twenty solid games. Soul Caliber is still
breathtaking.

I would also recommend a super nintendo. There are some serious classics as
well, including SuperMetroid, Zelda Games, Mario Games, etc. The orignal
Nintendo is also worth it.

Didn't we all just discuss why some people do this as soon as people are
talking about video games? Show me a good game on any system, and I will
want to play it.

I think Soul Caliber is running at up to 60 fps on the dreamcast, and it is
the nicest game I have ever seen. Nothing out there compares IMHO.

Medal of Honor is simply a first person shooter, and does not have much
gore. It recreates scenes from WW2. Your character shoots a ton of german
soldiers. They will love the video games side of it. This game is not like
the mario games, it is a 'war simulator' in the purest sense so far in video
games. On the other hand it is a good game and is not showing too much
gore. It is all violent. Perhaps rent it yourself and see if this is
something your kids are ready for yet. Put it this way, it is nothing like
Soldier of Fortune which I would not recommend, but it is also opposite
Monkey Ball 2 which I would fully recommend.
Here is my final verdict: I think MOH is violent but not at the levels of
other games. It does include non stop humans shooting humans, but none of
the victims show any signs of being shot, they fall to the ground and
disappear.

I will follow up with why the dreamcast failed in another thread. In short
people had jumped on bandwagons already (playstation versus N64 versus
Xbox), and since the dreamcast came out first of all the new systems, all
these fanboys flamed away. They were very wrong in their opinions since the
dreamcast is a great system, and it was obvious the majority of critics had
not every played a dreamcast.
Soul Caliber is IMO the best fighting game ever made. Everyone who has ever
played it (at least at my place) agrees. I had tekken Tag, but quickly
returned it. I am not sure what a game will need to improve on Soul
Caliber. I would recommend the dreamcast if the only game you would ever
buy is Soul Caliber.

Do you have those velcro strap-on wrist braces? I find those plus a
gel keyboard wrist rest really help, though they slow down my typing
slightly.
Exactly! Each system has something going for it, so get one if you want it.
Zelda will never be on another system, so I will get whatever system has
that game.

I think I am getting some wrist problems from weight lifting. I do
everything to ease pressure off my wrists, but the stupid 1/4 pound mouse is

I just picked up a PS2 yesterday!
Either pawn shops, video stores (block buster) or especially Electronics
Boutique. New games you may also try Superstore, which has often crazy
cheap prices. You could even try Ebay, for some cheap games.
