Time to ligthen up the mood. I'm doing a little writing and I
could use your valuable input if you're all interested. This
really applies to all who have lived here a few years... well okay quite
a few years.
Who remembers CKXL 1140, that radio who had one of the highest
Canadian ratings in the 70s and early 80s? All that
cool music they played then? Cars, Gary Numan, Devo, B52s, Pretenders,
Bob Welch, ELO, Boomtown Rats? I am after all talking the early days of
New Wave and such.
How 'bout CJAY 92's early days? Dieter Staschow's very
informative album rock show: Sterotypes? Used to be on every
weekday evening at 6 PM for an hour, way informative.
The clubs and bars then? The Beacon on 16th Ave? the Polo Club
on 10th Ave? Majestic (Magic Stix)?
Those risque strip clubs. I believe the Pink Panther was one of
them, I need help here.
I look forward to anyone's memories... it would be helpful and
enjoyable. We can go back even earlier if you want.
best regards,
Francois

Then they became Mix 1060. I hated that station for a long time. Then,
just as I was starting to really like it, it became AM1060. All soft stuff!
I was heartbroken. It was the day I switched to FM forever.

Darned! Joined the Navy in '57 and retired here in '83! So
I missed the 70's and 80's and at my advanced age (-: I can hardly remember
the '50's but I remember when the CFCN tower went up, and when Mayor Don
Mackay intoduced the White Hat and made it the symbol it is today. Good Luck
Francois -- you can always call me to fill in the gaps -- we
should do coffee.

That must go way back before where GSL "General Supplies Limited" is now. I
understood that property to be GSL since the 20's. North across the street was
a lumber mill.

Before Greyhound @ 4Ave was a car dealership?

Wow, that one was synaptic......that tweaked a memory cell. That area must
have been developed in the late '60's???
I am only late 30's years old in age, born here, 4th generation. My grandfather
tells me that he remembers seeing as young kid, tee-pees camped at what is now
the east edge of the Shaganappi golf course each Stampede until the early
20's. The road to where the village was a gravel road. Now Bow Trail. He
described that you would see campfires all day and night, people numbering into
the hundreds - a very wild west sort of story. After the Stampede was done,
they would all pack up and go.
Westbrook Mall is Western Canada's first enclosed shopping mall.
Not that this is a good memory, remember when Bob's Hamburgers were everywhere?
A JB's Big Boy hamburger could be shoved almost completely into one's mouth.
Mmmmmm..........
Now where have they gone? sniff, sniff....

The old airport ?
McCall Field was its name.
I used to go and sit on top of the roof back in the late 60's to watch
airplanes come and go.They even supplied the chairs and lounges people to
do that.
I departed to Hawaii in 1976 from McCall field.
I also supplied the Concrete for the communictaions line to the new
Airport terminal from the old one and the Field tower in 1977-78.
