Local activist and food enthusiast, Chelsea Pratchett will present a case study that looks at how Venezuela is redistributing oil industry r...oyalties in a concerted effort to increase food sovereignty. As the worlds fifth largest oil exporting country Venezuela is no stranger to the economic volatility that is tied to oil markets. Since the discovery of vast petroleum reserves in the early 20th century Venezuela’s once rich agricultural sector has been largely neglected for the more lucrative oil extraction and export industries. Subsequently, an influx of foreign currencies has kept food imports relatively low. The country currently depends on imports for 70 percent of its food supply, but recent policy implementations by Hugo Chavez’ socialist government may see this soon changed. Topics Include: • Effective use of oil industry revenues for the betterment of the people. o Subsides for small and medium scale farmers o Subsidies for the production of healthy, regionally specific food • Agricultural Land Reform • Reducing the industries dependency on agro-chemicals • Creating more jobs in an increasingly mechanized industry |
