I've had enough of Samsung

Hello to all,

I have been a Calengoo user for many years. My favorite feature is the flexibility in handling notifications repeats. My 2 last smartphones were Samsung and the reliability of those notifications have gotten worse and worse with time, to the point that currently I am not even sure that I get 1 notification repeat out of 2. So I have decided to get a new smartphone, of course not a Samsung!

I looked at dontkillmyapp.com and the only brand there which is recommended is HTC, but other brands seem at least quite better than Samsung.

So my question is: to those of you which rely on notification repeats, how reliable is your smartphone?

Thank you in advance!

Hi,

I don't use the repeat function myself but there are a few settings that you can try to make them more reliable:

Additionally you could try to increase the interval between the reminders. As far as I know Android sometimes does not want to be woken up too often to reduce the power consumption.

Does that fix it? 🤔

Kind regards

Dominique

Turn off the "Power saving" option. It'll make a difference.

Hello Dominique,

Thank you for your answer. I had indeed forgotten about this page.

I just checked all the points, my settings seem either correct or the setting doesn't exist in my smartphone (which is to be expected, Android settings change almost completely with each Android version, and many brands add their own changes to the settings).

I found one fishy thing, though: in my Samsung running Android 13, "Applications" > "Accès spécial" ("Special access") > "Alarmes et rappels" ("Alarms and reminders") gives me a list of applications and for each I can enable or disable this setting. But Calengoo is not mentioned in this list, so that I can't enable it. Do you think this is meaningful?

Regards,

Hi,

as far as I understand "Alarms and reminders" is only for alarm clocks and app that set such alarms.

Did you also try to use one of the other options under "Method to wake the device using the AlarmManager" in CalenGoo?

If that all doesn't help, you could use the log that you can find under "Settings > Reminders > Upcoming reminders" to see if CalenGoo was started at all at the time of the notification.

Please don't hesitate to contact me again if you have further questions!

Kind regards

Dominique

I forgot: the interval I currently use the most is 1 hour. Do you really think that this is too close and that using for example 2 hours might improve things?

No, I think the interval is fine. I meant that values under five minutes (e.g. to repeat the alarm every minute) might not work correctly sometimes. But an hour is fine.

Please don't hesitate to contact me again if you have further questions!

Kind regards

I've always had Google Pixels recently (4a and 7a), use repeats, and have never noticed this being an issue.

If you want better replies, you could write a specific procedure to test what is failing with you, and ask others to try it. I'd be willing to do so.

Oh and there is a caveat: I do use dev mode and do all kinds of weird things with my settings, so it's possible I accidently have some set of settings that make this a non-issue, and vanilla Pixels wouldn't do as well.

Ah, makes sense. This explains the names of some apps I find in this list.

Yes, with no obviously clear improvement.

Yes, this is something I always think I should do. The problem here is
that what usually happens is that at the end of the (busy) day, I
realize that I have been missing some notifications. Which? When? I have
no way to find out. How long are the logs? One day long? If so, I could
get them and analyse them.

I had eliminated Google Pixels because I use my phone to store my (big)
music library, and I thought I needed a SD card to do it. But since at
least some Pixels can have 512 GB RAM, why not? I'll keep this option in
mind

Thank you, but part of the problem is that I need those reminders... to
be reminded :-) If I could remember doing things spontaneously, like
checking if a reminder rang, I would need them much less, obviously. So
unless you can design a procedure that simulates my absent-mindedness, I
fear you can't help me much, here. But you made me realize that the
sound I use could be part of my problem. In order to avoid disturbing
others, I chose a very discreet one, but maybe it is too discreet. I
just changed it. Thank you for making me think of this.

So do I, and enabling dev mode is one of the first things I do when
setting up a new smartphone. So, I will have all the hypothetical
advantages of dev mode in this regard.

Ah okay, I see the difficulties. Also apologies for the duplicate emails to you and the list. I saw drafts and assumed I hadn't sent anything yet.

I have always had pixels recently (4a and 7a) and have not had this issue. I believe I'm on Android 15.

But Samsung is a major player, I feel like there must be a setting somewhere that'll fix the problem.

Did you make sure that Power Saving is not the problem?  Make sure that the battery setting for Calengoo is set to "unrestricted" and not optimized?
