Special color for tentative events not working for me

Settings / Display and Use / General: I have checked the boxes for "Special color for tentative events", and also "Tentative icon". However, when I mark an event as tentative, the icon shows up (as expected), but the tentative event still shows in the calendar's assigned color, NOT in the "special color" that I selected.

Am I doing something wrong (probably !), or is this a bug?

Best wishes

I am sorry, but I think it is confusing that there are two types of "tentative" events:
  1. Events were you are an attendee of the event and have chosed "maybe" to the invitation (instead of "yes" or "no").
  2. Events that are not "free" or "busy" but "tentative".
The color is only for the first option, i.e. where you are an attendee and have selected "maybe".

To change the color of the second option you have to set "Settings > Display and Use > General > Display free events" to "Special color". Then you can choose a color for "tentative" events.

Please don't hesitate to contact me again if you have further questions!

Kind regards

Follow-up: I changed the "Display free events" setting to "Special color". Then, I left the "free" color at the default setting, and I changed the color for tentative events to the one that I wanted. The tentative event does show up in the color that I have selected. So far, so good. But the setting change to "Special color" led to two other issues that affects all free events. First, I have subscribed to two public calendars (which I can't edit) to which I have assigned specific colors. After I made the change, both of those calendars were displayed using the color in the "free" setting. Second, on all of my calendars, I have set all-day events to show as free. Consequently, all of these events have changed from their assigned calendar colors, to the single color that is available for the "free" setting.

So, when selecting a color for free events under that special color setting, would it be possible to add a selection: "Use assigned calendar color"?

Yes, I had this same problem so I just manually set the color for the event when I set the event to Tentative.

I'd prefer it to be automatic. Also, thinking more about it, rather than selecting a specific color for all "tentative" events (which would render them all the same color, regardless of the calendar they're on),   it would be nice  to be able to select "Fade tentative events" (rather like the "Fade past events" in Agenda view).

Hi,

I have added "Settings > Display and Use > General > Fade tentative events" now for the next beta version 1584, which I will try to upload in a few days. 🙂

Kind regards

Hi again, Dominique. I have installed 1584, and I have checked the new setting. However, when I create a new event, and mark it as tentative, it does not show as faded. I think the problem is that - as you explained earlier in this thread - there are two different types of tentative event. I suspect that the new setting applies to the first type, but not the second?  However, I was asking about the second type of tentative which, as you explained, you change using the setting "Display free events - Special color". Below, in italics, I have copied (and slightly clarified) what I wrote to you a few weeks back in a new post, which was entitled  "Display free events - Special color". Is it possible to add these selections (below) to the "Display free events - Special color" setting?

I'd like to be able to be able to easily identify tentative events (as in free/tentative/busy). You showed me how to do it using  Settings > Display and Use > General > Display free events" to "Special color", then choose color for tentative. However,  doing that means that: (i) all tentative events are shown in the selected color, regardless of which calendar they're on and (ii) all free events also are set to the specific color you choose for that setting, again regardless of their calendar.

When the user selects "Special color" , two drop-downs appear: one for free events, the other for tentative events. Would it be possible to add  a "Use assigned calendar color" choice for the "free event" setting (which, if selected, would, in effect, leave the display of free events unchanged)? And for the "tentative" drop-down, add "Assigned calendar color, faded" , so that tentative events would be displayed in the calendar's color, but would be faded?

Hi Dominique - any chance that you can add the selections described in my post of Dec 23rd (or, if not, could you let me know, so that I'll no longer request it? ;-)

Hi,

I will add a switch to fade tentative events with the next beta version. You can then find it under "Settings > Display and Use > General". I will try to upload the beta version next week. Please try it again with that version and tell me if you need anything else! :-)

Kind regards

I've been following this post with interest as I've desired this for quite some time but just had a work-around as I mentioned in a previous post in this thread. I never requested anything just because I know Dominique has his hands full and he's already implemented a number of requests for me in the past. I'm probably going on 10 years of using Calengoo.

That said, and now this has been worked on, I see @ScotProf request to fade tentative events has been implemented, but his request to be able to select specific calendars to apply specific colors to tentative events didn't get implemented. Personally, I rather not fade tentative events just because all my past events get faded. The ability to apply a specific color is a great solution. However, as @ScotProf indicated, it changes the color for all calendars. And the current settings force you to change free events along with tentative events. Is there a specific reason why tentative events is under the free event setting? I would think they would be independent. In other words, I want to be able to apply a specific color to tentative events without affecting all my free events in all my calendars. Does that make sense?

My current problem is I have a particular calendar that i want all events, no matter what the availability setting is to be a specific color. But on my other calendars I want to be able to set free and tentative to different specific colors. With the current settings this is impossible because the only way to change a tentative event color is by selecting the free event color. Now, I'm forced to change the free event AND tentative event color for all calendars.

Is it possible just to make a setting for specific color tentative events independent of the setting for the free events?

Thank you Dominique for considering this. Calengoo is such an awesome app I don't know what I'd do without it and that's why I've donated to you multiple times. Whether you're able to implement this request or not, I just want to say a big thank you for your excellent work.

Hi Wayne,

I am sorry, I had so many other things to do. Thank you for reminding me of this post! I have implemented a separate configuration option for the color of tentative events now. So that you can only set a special color for tentative events but not for free events. I will try to upload a new version in the next few days. :-)
