ولد في الكفرون لعائلة مكونة من خمسة أبناء بدايته في الفن كانت بسن الرابعة عشر حيث اشتهر في سوريا من خلال غنائه موال حاصبيا انتقل إلى دمشق للغناء في مطعم الحديقة الخضراء لكن نقابة الموسيقيين أصدرت قرارًا بمنعه من الغناء لأنّه لم يبلغ الثامنة عشر من العمر. لكن أحد المعجبين بموهبته توسط له فسمح له بالغناء بحجّة أن صوته أكبر من عمره. بعد اشتهاره محليًا انتقل إلى لبنان ولم يكن قد تجاوز السادسة عشر من عمره بعد وقام الفنانان جورج يزبك والفنان وديع الصافي برعايته فنيًا تعامل مع ملحنين مثل سيد مكاوي وشاكر الموجي وبليغ حمدي وقدم معهم العديد من الأعمال واشتهرت أغنيته الهوى سلطان فنال بسببها لقب سلطان الطرب اشترك في برنامج الهواة ستوديو الفن عام 1980[10][11]
كانت انطلاقته الفنيّة مع المواويل التي مهّدت له طريق الفن. في أحد الأيام غنى جورج في حفلة مدرسيّة موالا كان قد حفظه عن والده يقول مطلعه:
بعد أن اشتهر بدأت العروض تنهال عليه في دمشق وهو في بداية العقد الثاني من عمره. وحقق شهرة كبيرة وعرض عليه أن يسافر إلى لبنان وهو لا يتجاوز السادسة عشر من عمره فوافق على الفور ويقال أنه قال: لقد نمت على الأرصفة من أجل فني.بعد ذياع صيته في أرجاء لبنان انهالت عليه الدعوات لإحياء حفلات في المقاهي الليلية والفنادق الفخمة.أولى حفلاته كانت في أحد فنادق عالية الكبيرة وأخذ يقدم الحفلات في سوريا وفي لبنان وأطلق عليه لقب المطرب المعجزة أو الطفل المعجزة. في بداية احترافه غنّى للكبار مثل عبد الحليم حافظ أم كلثوم ووديع الصافي. وفي مطلع التسعينات من القرن المنصرم غنى أغنية كاظم الساهر والتي ناسبت خامة صوته وأسلوبه في الطرب وهي أغنية سلمتك بيد الله. وبعدها انتشر أكثر فأكثر بفضل أغانيه الخاصة مثل: الحبايب دقيت على الأبواب حلف القمر بتعاتبني على كلمة... وجميعها من تلحين كبار الموسيقيين من بليغ حمدي زهير عيساوي نور الملاّح شاكر الموجي سيّد مكّاوي كان جورج وسوف ملتزما بالأصالة الموسيقية الشرقية ولا يهتم بكثرة الإنتاج.تجاوز نشاط جورج وسوف الفنّي حدود بلاده سوريا فقد أقام حفلات في جميع أنحاء العالم العربي أوروبا أمريكا كندا وأستراليا. وفي عام 1985 غنّى في مهرجان قرطاج في تونس أمام 15 ألفٍ من عشّاقه وقدم ريع الحفلة للأعمال الخيريّة.
تعرّف على زوجته شاليمار حين كان يحيي إحدى الحفلات وكان عمره تقريبا 21 سنة. تم الزواج المدني في باريس لأن أهلها لم يكونوا راضين. وفي أقوال أخرى لما طلبها رفضوه فتزوجها من دون علمهم خطيفة كما درج إطلاق هذه العبارة على هذا النوع من الزيجات رزق منها بوديع حاتم وجورج جونيور. انفصل الزوجان بعد 28 عامًا من الزواج في عام 2009.[12]
في عام 2001 أجرى عملية جراحية غير فيها وركيه[17] في ليلة 19 أكتوبر عام 2011 تعرض لجلطة دماغية إثر إهماله لتناول دواء الضغط الخاص به فغاب عن الوسط الفني مدة ثلاث سنوات وكان في هذه المدة يتنقل في عدة دول عربية وأوروبية لتلقي العلاج وعلى إثرها أصيب بشلل نصفي في نصفه الأيسر. كان أول ظهور له بعد الوعكة في برنامج خاص (قول يا ملك) على قناة الحياة والجديد مع الإعلامي نيشان ديرهاروتيونيان عام 2014 ومثل بداية عودته إلى الساحة الفنية.[18]
تم اعتقاله من قبل الشرطة السويدية في ستوكهولم مساء السبت 2 نوفمبر 2008 بدعوى حيث ذكرت إحدى الصحف المحلية أنه تم ضبط 30 غراما من الكوكايين بحوزته وذلك قبيل استعداده لإحياء حفل غنائي قرب المدينة تم إلغاؤه لاحقًا. وتمت تبرئته في النهاية ولم يثبت عليه شيء وتبين أنها قضية ملفقة [19]ولكن جورج قال بأن هذه إشاعة وليست حقيقة للتشويش على حفله الغنائي المقرر في السويد حينها.
في فجر يوم 7 يناير 2023 أعلن جورج وسوف في حسابه الشخصي على تويتر عن وفاة ابنه البكر وديع مساء يوم الجمعة الموافق 6 يناير.[20][21]

George Wassouf (Arabic: جورج وسوف; 23 December 1961) is a Syrian singer.[1][2][3] In a career spanning more than four decades, he has released more than 30 albums, with a significantly large audience of fans throughout the Arab world. Dubbed Sultan El-Tarab (Arabic: سلطان الطرب), he is one of the most successful Arab singers selling over 60 million records worldwide.[4]
Wassouf was born in Kafroun, Syria to a Greek Orthodox Christian family.[5] Wassouf started singing at the age of 10 in his hometown Kafroun. He was discovered by his first manager and producer George Yazbeck at a wedding party that Wassouf was performing at, aged 12 years old. At the age of 16, he was called Sultan El-Tarab by the Lebanese journalist George Ibrahim El Khoury, a magazine director, Arabic for The Sultan of Music, with his classic song "el-Hawa Sultan".[6] He became famous after appearing on the Lebanese show Studio El Fan 1980 when he was 19 years old as Sultan of Tarab.[6] Wassouf also holds Lebanese citizenship.
Wassouf preferred not to shoot music videos for his songs saying: "I don't feel I can act... I really can't... I only find myself when I'm on the stage... singing, but the video clip forces me to act".[6]
George Wassouf married his first wife, Shalimar, at the age of 21. They have three children: Wadih who died on 6-January 2023 following a surgery, Hatem and George Jr. The couple separated after 28 years of marriage in 2009.[7]
George Wassouf (Arabic: جورج وسوف) is a notable Syrian singer. He was born on December 23, 1961, moved to Beirut at a young age, and was called the miraculous child at that time, for his artistic talent in singing.
George Wassouf started singing very young at the age of 10 years old in his hometown Kafroun that consequent to Mashta Al Helou in Tartous, Syria on different occasions such as marriages, parties, hotels, etc. Shortly thereafter he moved to Lebanon where he started singing and his popularity grew. It was at the age of 16 years old when he became known as "Sultan El-Tarab" as called by the famous international Actor Omar Sharif, Arabic for "The Sultan of Singing", with his classic song "el-Hawa Sultan".
People at that time thought of him as being the only one who could provide tarab with his magical and crystal voice that was very sharp and high-pitched when he was young and matured into the deep, commanding voice that he is now known for. A few of his first songs include "Hawa Sultan", "Rohi ya Nesmah", "Helif el-Amar", "Law Naweit" are the ones that really brought him up to fame.
The family name "Wassouf" is first of all the name of a statue God that was worshipped in the middle ages (around 1500 b.c.). Wassouf's magical voice was discovered by his first manager and producer "George Al-Khouri". This happened when Wassouf was 12 years old - he was singing at a wedding party. George Wassouf also got married very young at the age of 21 to Shalimar, who is originally from Sierra Leone. They have three children: Wadee', Hatem, and George Jr. His oldest son's name is Wadee', which is why he is known as Abu Wadee'.
George Wassouf has produced more than 30 albums and has performed concerts all around the world. Started from the famous Lebanese show which fired the fame of many Lebanese singers "Studio El Fan" 1980 when he was only 16 years old, surprisingly he was called at this time "Sultan of Tarab". The Song "Hilef il Amar" made a massive hit in the Arab world, although Wassouf was quite young at that time. However Wassouf was able to rise to the rank of "king" of Arab Tarab. Many Singers are jealous of wassouf , and that's why they try to copy his unique style and performance. Some of the younger singers who attempt to copy his style are George al-Rassi and Wael Jassar. Wassouf is one of the few singers that were able to attract millions of fans in a short period of time. In addition, Wassouf is not only famous in the Arab World but is also known in Europe and the States as one of the Best Arabian Singers.
