I got a set of fonts through an education catalog that had cursive and
manuscript trace fonts on lines. They are great as I can also make blank
lines with it for them to practice after they hav traced the letters.
The CD was Teacher's Fonts and the font collection I ourchased Was
called Primnary Fonts II. The company was Forest Technologies. A
number on the cd is 18005443356. I purchased them several years ago so I
have no idea if that number is still correct but it couldn't hurt to try.J-

The Primary or Primary II packages of
include what you're
looking for. Similar fonts are also included in some of the Apple
Learning Series bundles. Posted & e-mailed; do not reply by e-mail.--

If she is a teacher, she shouldn't get that complicated (and
expensive). There are fonts specifically designed to be traced.
Look at:
www.edresources.comAlso other good software for kids and hard to find elsewhere.

Tracing fonts can be especially helpful for kids who are just starting to learn how to write, as the dots or dashes provide a visual guide for forming each letter. This can make the process of learning to write much easier and more intuitive for children, who can simply follow the dots or dashes to create the letters.

Tracing fonts are also a great tool for kids who struggle with writing. Some children may have difficulty with the fine motor skills needed to write, and tracing fonts can provide them with the support they need to practice and improve their writing skills.

Using tracing fonts can be a fun and engaging way for kids to practice their writing skills. Whether they are just starting to learn the alphabet or struggling with writing, tracing fonts can provide the support and guidance they need to improve their skills. So why not give tracing fonts a try with your child and see the difference it can make in their writing ability?

These days, fonts to be used on computers are represented in one of twoways: as a bitmap font, which specifies each individual pixel inthe image of a character; and/or as an outline font, whichspecifies the image as a collection of mathematically-specified curves. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages; typesettingprograms, page description languages, and output devices can generallydeal with both.

Limn converts a font from a bitmap to an outline by fitting curves tothe pixels. Non-shape-related information in the bitmap font, such asthat for the side bearings, is preserved in the outline output.

Specifically, the input is a bitmap (GF or PK) font. The output is aBZR outline font (see section BZR files), which can then be converted to(for example) Metafont or PostScript with BZRto (see section BZRto).

There is a fair amount of literature on converting bitmaps to outlines. We found three particularly helpful: Philip Schneider's Master's thesison his system Phoenix; Michael Plass and Maureen Stone's article`Curve-fitting with piecewise parametric cubics' published in SIGGRAPH;and Jakob Gonczarowski's article `A fast approach to auto-tracing (withparametric cubics)' in the RIDT 91 conference proceedings. Seethe file `limn/README' for the full citations.

Limn uses 2 for n and 1 for alt_n by default. You can usethe options `-filter-surround' and`-filter-alternative-surround' to change them. If the resolutionof the input font is not 300dpi, you should scale themproportionately. (For a 1200dpi font, we've had good results with`-filter-surround=12' and `filter-alternative-surround= 6'.)

For the purposes of using Limn, the important thing is that Limn mustcompute the tangents to the spline at the beginning and end, and must doso accurately in order to achieve a good fit to the bitmap. Since Limnhas available only samples (i.e., the pixel coordinates) of the curvebeing fit, it cannot compute the true tangent. Instead, it mustapproximate the tangent by looking at some number of coordinates oneither side of a point. By default, the number is 3, but you canspecify a different number with the `-tangent-surround' option. Ifthe resolution of the input font is different than 300dpi, or ifthe outline Limn fits to the bitmap seems off, you will want to scale itproportionately.
