Maybe it was already asked before and if so, I am sorry for taking your time with this, but I have upgraded to Windows 11 and both Quake and Quake II stopped working (Quake 1, in particular, shows "wad could not be loaded" error, among others). I tried several engines to no avail. Is there a workaround to this? How can I run Quake and Quake II without having to reinstall both?

Thanks for respoinding. It's a pity there is currently no Windows 11-ready solution. I had to buy a new machine, and it is impossible to downgrade to Windows 7 on this machine, as it has Windows 11 embedded from the plant. But thanks anyway. I will try the compatibility mode solution and then, if it does not work, wait for a new engine / solution that will support Windows 11. Hopefully it appears, eventually.

vs windows 11 that comes with malware preinstalled and leaves you in violation of the gdpr as soon as you save an email address to 'your' drive? (unless you paid about $1000 for the enterprise version, which also happens to be unavailable unless you're buying about 1000+ licenses at a time).
but yes, there's a number of issues faced by games running on win11 that were not an issue in win7, though they usually don't stop you from getting in-game.

'wad could not be loaded'. the only wad quake actually uses is gfx.wad found inside id1/pak0.pak - if you're running quake without that pak file relative to your working directory then the fault is on your(or the docs) part. you can't just run it and expect it to magically know where you installed the game data.

Hey there dumptruck_ds, huge fan of your YouTube channel! Microsoft isn't done patching W11, Chinese insiders @ Baidu say the final release will be simply called Windows 12 (so it won't be free this time). Not sure if it's true but a good benchmark is the absence of a LTSC/IoT edition of W11 in 2 years. In comparison, W10 got LTSB with it's initial release from beta in 2015 (or maybe like 3 month later at most). This makes me think any W11 version is beta at best before W11 LTSC/IoT is released.

Microsoft is still patching Windows 10, or was till recently with new features. I am on Windows 11, and some things really don't work as well as Windows 10, but it's about as good as the previous Windows version. Also I think Windows 12 will also have even more data collection than before, so I'm sure it will be free since you're transitioning from being the customer to being the product.

I don't expect any trouble with Q3. 1.32 should work fine. Blind advice about source ports don't realize they won't work in Win98 (mainly because of some unix/gcc/sdl2 cruft reasons which could've been avoided with basic competence)

The GOG version of UT99 worked fine in my 98SE test setup (Pent 3, GeForce 2MX, Voodoo 2, Vortex 2), but I ran the installer and applied several patches (eg. UT Bonus Pack 4, deleting the nGlide Glide DLLs, updated OpenGL renderer) on a XP setup and then copied the files over directly. I don't know if the GOG installer will work fine on 98SE directly.

I have the Steam version of Q3A, myself, but considering I've gotten it to work on that unit by overwriting the provided Q3A executable with the non-Steam 1.32c one, I believe the GOG version should work fine. ioquake3 hasn't worked for me, however, but I think it's a matter of recompiling with some needed libraries and/or using KernelEx.

GOG's installer doesn't work on Win98, but there's a workaround.
There's a utility that extracts the files from GOG's installers. I don't remember the name of it, but it's been discussed in other threads before.

I used that utility to extract the files from the GOG versions of Unreal and Unreal Tournament (that's the same as UT99, isn't it?). I then copied those extracted files to a folder on Win98SE and they run fine.

There's a minor fix you have to make to restore native Glide support. GoG has the install contaminated with nGlide by default (or whatever it's called). I think the fix is just to delete 1 or 2 files. This gets rid of nGlide and then the game's Glide mode should revert to it's original form, working with real 3dfx hardware. I haven't tested the Glide mode personally though.
I have no idea about Quake 3.

The update for Windows Terminal comes as Microsoft's Build 2021 conference wraps up and marks the two-year anniversary of its open-source terminal application for developers who use Command Prompt, PowerShell, and the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).

Version 1.9 of the Windows Terminal Preview introduces "quake mode", which allows users to fire up a new terminal instance from anywhere in Windows by typing the shortcut Win + `. It can be dismissed with the same shortcut. The terminal is 'snapped' to the top half of the monitor and can only be resized from the bottom.

With this version of Windows Terminal Preview, users can set it as the default emulator on Windows, allowing any command line application to launch inside the user's selected terminal emulator. For example, double clicking on PowerShell will automatically open it inside Windows Terminal Preview.

The new default emulator setting is in the just-released Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 21390 for Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel. The setting can be found inside the console property sheet and is in the settings UI in Windows Terminal Preview.

Microsoft has also created an italic version of its Cascadia Code font that it developed just for Windows Terminal. The font can be downloaded from GitHub. The Windows Terminal team are also adding Arabic and Hebrew characters to Cascadia Code in mid-June.

Customizing keyboard shortcuts should be easier now with the ability to edit existing actions from the Actions page inside the settings UI. There's also a new page in the settings UI for creating a new profile with the option to start a new profile or duplicate an existing one. And there's new preview window that let's users check the look of their profile as they're making it.

There are several bug fixes too, including a bug causing the 'news and interest' taskbar widget to appear blurry on some resolutions and scaling factors. It also fixes a dark mode glitch that caused the text in the File Explorer search box to be black on a black aground. Microsoft is still trying to fix a similar text coloring issue affecting Search in the task bar.

But especially these "OpenGL" drivers (available over the Odin homepage) are nothing else than the Mesa OpenGL implementations with special hardware acceleration for Voodoo 1 and 2 adapters. The Mesa drivers also feature full software rendering versions. So I thought, why not use the Windows Mesa drivers for full software rendering with Quake III Arena?

With these libraries, it should be possible to "play" Quake III on nearly every OS/2 machine (fast enough for software rendering ;) ).Here's the description of how I used them to really get it to work and how I "optimized" them.

Look at my screenshots in the 'scr1' (my first try) and 'scr2' (already optimized) directories to see how it looks like. The screenshots in the 'scr2' directory were taken at 640x480 screen resolution.

I found an older Mesa version (v. 3.1) somewhere in the net, too. I experienced that it is a bit faster (makes 1-2 FPS more) then the newer versions but can't display everything (e.g. some menus) because there are obviously not as many functions implemented. So I can't recommend you to use it but anyway, I put it in the 'files' directory ('mesa3d-31.zip').

You should use a new version of the Quake III engine. It's available at the ID-Software homepage.I used the Point Release 1.32 for my tests.[* Eventually my Quake III config file. Read section 3 for more details.]

Despite it doesn't seem to matter with Quake III, you should switchFullscreen-support for DirectDraw on (configure using the Odin.ini). It's not necessary to install the Win32-support-driver. If you want to start a Windows program, simply use the PE.EXE (with the program's path as parameter).(Skip this, if you have already installed Odin.)

The installation program on the Quake III Arena CD doesn't seem to work (at least not my version). Anyway it's better to use an updated version. So download a recent Quake III Arena Point Release (for Windows) from the ID-Software homepage and install it. On my system, the installation worked flawless. Now copy the 'pak0.pk3' file (from your Quake III Arena CD) to the 'baseq3' directory of your installed Quake III version.
