Dear Task Force,
This is a first send to our new roster (thank you, Audrey!) with some news for the next few weeks. There are contacts from our task force for both items below; you should feel free to reach out to them directly with questions or interest.
David and I will also be sending out a meeting packet in advance of our each of our monthly full-force meetings. Those will include notes from the prior month's meeting, the meeting agenda for that month's meeting, and any relevant attachments. You'll receive packets one week prior to each meeting. On to the news:
UPCOMING MEETINGS:
It has been suggested that it's critical for some of our task force to make it to both next Thursday's Homeless Advisory Commission (HAC) meeting as well as the City Council meeting the following Tuesday in order to make sure there is support for an item regarding a referral to study vacancy conversions (see attached). The reason for this is that some recent progressive proposals have passed out of the commission on a narrow 5-4 vote, and only after the public showed up!
Public comment in support of this item and any input that could be used to further refine the proposal would be very helpful. There is also a second important agenda item during the same two meetings: one councilmember is proposing lowering the Affordable Housing Mitigation Fee paid by developers of new buildings from what it will otherwise go into effect next month.
Meeting Details:
HAC: 7pm, Thursday, 10/2, South Berkeley Senior Center (2393 Ellis St.)
City Council: 7 pm, Tuesday, 10/7, City Council Chambers (2134 MLK)
AN UPCOMING OPPORTUNITY:This Fall, Steven Segal is teaching the class Social Welfare 235: Homelessness In America. As part of the class assignments there are seven Learning Groups. Each group will develop a 30 page paper and related presentation on a particular aspect of homelessness. It would be very interesting to have the groups look at the way these topics are being addressed in the Berkeley CoC plan as well as the literature and perhaps to have them address each of these topics in the Berkeley context.
The groups are doing weekly presentations beginning October 20, 2014. Task Force members interested and invested in any of the areas would be welcome to come to the presentation and have ten minutes following the presentation and class discussion to add their perspective on how the proposed solutions fit into Berkeley's context. Then our Task Force might choose (with the student permission) to use the student papers—due December 1, 2014—as part of our basis for the recommendations we put forth to the City.
