Hello All, Just reading the article on the Health care debate and the
posts on the Calaveras Enterprise site. Our web site would be a great
place for this discussion. Can't wait to get it up and running. Is
anyone planning a community dicussion in our County on this issue?
Just wondering, Melissa

Hi Melissa,
This discussion is raging on thepinetree.net in their survey section. There's also a discussion forming online in the article on calaverasenterprise.com.

pinetree is anonymous and has lots of comments. The enterprise only prints comments with names attached so it doesn't get anywhere near the discussion it deserves. I posted this morning! -- Mary

the east calaveras democrats blog leaves lots of room for discussion but its just not happenin' there. -- Mary

Hi Mary. Yes thanks for the update. Any plans out there to meet with
these local experts? I would love the opportunity to meet and learn
more. Is that happening? melissa

I would like to see a townhall right here in Angels. Lungren is in Jackson on the 22nd and then meets the Repubs for their annual dinner at La Contenta that evening. Jackson will be packed! I don't know the numbers but the usual suspects will carpool to Jackson to lend their voice to reform.

Hi, Melissa,

Calaveras Connects will be an excellent forum for this type of discussion.
I don't like thepinetree.net because posts are unanimous and there is no
filtering. Crazies can get on and just spout off. I think that puts off the
more reasonable person who may have strong opinions. The result is there is
no real meaningful dialogue. Kind of what is happening at some town halls
around the country.

In a separate email, I'm sending some information regarding the August 22
town hall meeting Dan Lundgren is having in Jackson. The Calaveras County
Democratic Central Committee (CCDCC) is coordinating with the Amador County
Democratic Central Committee to have a presence at the meeting and a
strategy going into the meeting. Take a look at the other email I'm
forwarding. If you have any questions, give me or Tillman a call.

Hope you'll make it to the CCDCC meeting tomorrow night. We have Gary
Davis, another of the CD3 candidates speaking. Will give us an opportunity
to see how he may stack up against Lundgren.

Thanks Sharon! I am interested. It is important to me to learn more.
Speaking for myself and my husband, we do not know enough! Yet still
we have our opinion....dangerous! I think it would be great if our
local leaders held an informational exchange on the issues. What can
we do here? ME

I think it's unlikely that there will be a town hall in both Angels and Jackson on the 22nd, so I strongly suggest we all attend the one in Jackson.  It will be wonderful to see so many people who want to air their views on this topic, and I'm going to make sure that people who share my position will be there!  Holly

Holly,
No one is advocating a townhall in Angels on the same day. Driving to Jackson for Lungren is a drag.

If it was President Obama I wouldn't be writing this!

I hope everyone knows that the information about the time of the Town Hall meeting is incorrect in the email that is circulating.  The meeting begins at 10:00, not 10:30!  It's very important to get there early to be assured a seat.  Be there by 9:00 or 9:30 at the latest!

Hi Holly,

I wondered about this start time thing too. The official start time on Lungren's web site shows 10:30.  I agree with you that everyone should go waaaayyyy early. Some of the most rural townhalls have had big crowds.

Lundgren’s website does state the meeting starts at 10:30, but I wholeheartedly agree with Holly that anyone interested should be there early.

If you haven’t seen the email forwarded earlier today from the Amador County Democratic Central Committee regarding a strategy for the meeting, please see the information provided below.

Hope to see as many of you as possible on August 22!  If you would like to car pool from San Andreas, I can take six passengers in my car.  (I’ll take the gas hog that day if you need a ride instead of my fuel efficient vehicle.)  Give me a call or send an email if you’d like a ride.

Email from the Amador County Democratic Central Committee:

The Insurance Industry is out in force to stall and stop any health care reform. They have teamed up with front groups to stop any meaningful debate on health care reform. If our opponents get their way, they will stall the best opportunity for health care reform ever.

Our plan is simple:
A strong showing of support for real reform and a counterforce to right wing attacks from groups like "Tea Party Patriots".

To do this, we want to mobilize large numbers of constituents for Congressional Town Hall meetings like the one on Saturday, August 22 in Jackson being held by Republican Dan Lungren.

Dan Lungren does NOT support any of the proposals for health care reform. He won't even admit there is a real problem saying that there are only 9 million uninsured in America who want insurance. Almost everyone, except Lungren agrees the problem of uninsured and underinsured is far greater at approximately 47 million Americans. Lungren claims 38 million are uninsured by choice.

Our plan is to attend this meeting and send a message to the congressman that health care reform can't wait. The message will be taken directly to Lungren in writing. The Amador Democratic Party is encouraging you to write a letter to Congressman Lungren. More details are below.

If you plan on going to the meeting, we anticipate there may be protesters ready to shout us down and disrupt any discussion, questions or debate. We do not want to give them any chance to do this. Below are some tips to help everyone avoid a disruptive confrontation.

We encourage you to come to this, or one of the other two town halls being held in the district. Don't let the rabble scare you away from standing up for health care as a right for everyone.

We are closer to real health care reform than we have ever been. That is why corporate America is fighting so hard and so dirty. Everyone who believes in comprehensive, affordable, and accessible health care for all must step up. Everyone has to do his or her part. That is how we win!

The town hall is scheduled for:
Saturday, August 22, 2009
10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Jackson City Hall

Please let us know if you will be attending.

Tips for a successful town hall

Arrive early. The meeting is currently scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM. Someone from the Democratic Party will be there at 8:00 AM. We will try to have signs available so that we can stand on the sidewalk (not blocking) on the corner and be visible with our message.

If there are protesters from the other side, do not engage them. This is what they want, it doesn't help our message. Please resist the urge. Whether you are a strong single payer advocate and/or support Obama's plan, the "Teabaggers" will try to engage you. If there is press there, they will "snap your picture" and blame us for the disruption. We should not be silenced or discouraged from engaging in the democratic process and should participate. Do so in a thoughtful and articulate manner.

Do not debate on their "policy" points. Stay on message and re-focus the agenda on communicating that message to Lungren.

We plan to have people assigned to talk to and stay close to the press. If you have experience with talking to the press and would like to help in this area please contact Randy at amadord...@bayneweb.com.

What We Are Doing

Letters to Lungren

The main focus of our attendance at the town hall will be the delivery of letters to Lungren regarding health care reform.  Below is a sample of a brief letter. It is only a sample and it is important that you re-write it in your own words. This letter must come from you.

Letters should be handwritten, if possible, and must be individualized. Share your personal health care story, if you have one. To keep them as unique and individual as possible we are not supplying any materials and ask that you use your own paper and envelopes. You can write a letter, a card, or a note. What matters is that it is individual.

Please address the envelope or card as you would if you were mailing it (handwritten). Do not put postage on it. We will collect the letters prior to the meeting and deliver them to Lungren at the town hall. If you are unable to be at the town hall email amadord...@bayneweb.com or call 257-1397 so we can make arrangements to pick them up.

A sample letter and talking points are below and on at www.amadordemocrats.org. Please individualize them into a handwritten letter.

Sample Letter

Sample letter to Dan Lungren on health care.

Share your disappointment and encourage Lungren to join us for quality, affordable health care for all. Share your personal health care stories if you have one.

Congressman Dan Lungren
2339 Gold Meadow Way
Suite 220
Gold River, CA 95670

Dear Mr. Lungren:

I understand that you are opposed to a comprehensive health care solution that makes quality, affordable health care available for all.

Private insurers have dominated the health care debate for too long and their solutions don't work. I urge you to not leave Americans alone to fend for themselves in the bureaucratic, unregulated private insurance market.

We want a choice to keep our private plans with fair rules to protect us from being denied, or to choose a public plan that is affordable and accessible to all.

Sincerely,

Talking Points

Health Care Reform

If you have a personal story about how you were negatively affected health insurance, share it.

The status quo is unsustainable.

Health insurance reform will build on our current system, to bring security and stability to people who already have insurance and give access to quality, affordable care to those who don't.

Reform isn't only about the people who don't have insurance - it's about anyone who's ever been afraid of losing their coverage if they become sick, lose their job, or change their job.

President Obama's vision of health care reform puts you and your doctor, instead of the insurance companies, in charge of your own health care.

This legislation gets a grip on health care costs that are crushing the middle class.

This legislation will improve health care quality by curbing insurance company abuses, rewarding doctors for improving the quality of care instead of increasing the quantity of care and forcing insurers to compete with a quality public health insurance plan. This means a great deal to all of us and our families.

It even helps employers - especially small business that now pay the highest insurance premiums- by making it easier to provide and pay for health benefits.

President Obama's proposal has a strong public plan option that will keep insurance companies honest and drive waste out of the system.  Even the insurance companies admit that hundreds of billions of dollars don't go for helpful care. With competition from a strong public plan, we can finally stop them from wasting all this money.

The Obama plan means health care will be there for you, not matter what. If you lose your job, or your kid loses his. If you get sick. When you retire. If your plan closes or your company goes into Chapter 11. That strong public health insurance option means you and your family can't fall through the cracks. No matter what.

RSVP

I hope you are able to join us on August 22, or at least write a letter to add to the hundreds we hope to deliver. Please call (209) 257-1397 or send us an email so we will know how many to expect and are prepared.

Be Well,
Randy
