Roadside assistance exists to help you out if your car gets stuck on the side of the road. You can use the coverage for a tow if your engine breaks down. Emergency roadside service also covers services like battery jump-starts, flat tire changes, fuel delivery, lockout assistance and more.
You can get stand-alone roadside assistance memberships from companies like AAA. Many people also get roadside assistance coverage from their car insurance company. Your manufacturer or extended car warranty may come with roadside coverage as well.
Many roadside assistance plans cover one or two hours of mechanical labor at the scene if you need a quick fix. So, you may be able to get some services outside of the ones outlined above depending on what the roadside technician can do.
Some roadside assistance plans cover winching services. This is useful if you run off the road and get stuck in the mud or brush. In this case, the roadside technician will hook up a cable to your vehicle and use a winch to pull it back to the road. Your car would have to be within 100 feet of the main road, though, or the winch might not reach it.
Your roadside coverage may also include trip interruption benefits. This covers the cost of food and lodging up to a limit if your car breaks down far from home. The coverage might require you to be 50, 100 or 200 miles from home to get reimbursed for expenses.
How much roadside assistance costs depends largely on how you buy a plan. Insurance companies offer roadside assistance as an insurance add-on for as low as $10 to $20 per year, while auto clubs like AAA can cost about $70 to $150 per year. Roadside plans from insurance companies may have lower coverage limits than plans from auto clubs.
Either type of roadside plan can usually save you money if your vehicle breaks down. Without roadside assistance, you might pay $50 to $100 for a jump-start or spare tire installation out of pocket. And getting a tow could cost $100 to $200 depending on how far you are from a mechanic.
All roadside assistance plans come with coverage limits. A plan may have a limit per occurrence like $100. In this case, it would pay up to $100 for locksmith services, spare tire installation or other on-site labor at any one time.
Other plans may cover whatever the cost is for a particular service but have a maximum per year. Some plans have both a maximum per occurrence and a maximum per year. Finally, roadside plans may cover a limited number of occurrences per year, as well. Read the terms and conditions to know exactly what the service provider covers.
Depending on the type of company that provides the coverage, you might have to pay for a service up front and submit receipts for reimbursement. This can be the case if you have roadside assistance through an extended car warranty or even through your auto insurance policy. This is usually not the case if you have roadside assistance from a specialty company like AAA.
Roadside assistance gives you one number to call when your car breaks down. It covers some or all of the cost of towing, battery jump-starts, lockout assistance, fuel delivery and spare tire installation. You can look into roadside assistance companies like AAA or check with your insurance provider to see if it offers roadside assistance coverage.
Roadside assistance is a membership plan that provides services to get you moving again when your car breaks down. It typically requires an annual fee, though some are pay-per-use memberships and others come free with manufacturer or extended warranties.
Breakdown coverage usually includes towing, lockout assistance, battery jump-starts, spare tire installation and fuel delivery. It can also include winching, trip interruption coverage or battery replacement depending on the company. Different plans have varying limits on free roadside services too.
It can be a good idea to get breakdown coverage if you want peace of mind for roadside issues. Cars are more likely to have mechanical issues as they age, but you can get a flat tire or lock yourself out of the car at any time.

You can rely on our roadside assistance, wherever you happen to be in the U.S., 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. All we ask is that your car is under warranty. If your warranty has expired, assistance is still available for a charge.
