The reason that spacecraft and the DSN use binary code to communicate is that it's easier for computers to process than decimal notation or text, and it also takes up less memory. Binary transmissions can also better withstand errors from signal noise caused by interference. If a noisy transmission is received, as long as 1 and 0 can be differentiated, the message can be deciphered, cleaned, and restored to a pristine state of 1s and 0s.

In this lesson, students will encode and decode planetary images themselves, developing their academic skills while gaining an understanding of some of the complexities of obtaining information from faraway places. For simplicity, we skip the RGB codes used in real space image processing, which are in hexadecimal, or base 16, and instead provide students with suggested coloring schemes in binary code.

Generate a number or shape pattern that follows a given rule. Identify apparent features of the pattern that were not explicit in the rule itself. For example, given the rule "Add 3" and the starting number 1, generate terms in the resulting sequence and observe that the terms appear to alternate between odd and even numbers. We live in a binary world. Our computers, music, books, magazines, almost every form of media is digital and it all runs on the binary code. But, it is surprising how little many of us understand about the code that influences so much of our lives. For Teen Tech Week in March 2017, I wanted to do a program for tweens on coding and showing them the binary system. But, is binary code easy enough for kids to understand and write? Can we do a coding program without a computer? As we found out, the answers are yes, and yes!

How it went:
We began by talking about the binary code and how it is made up of 0s and 1s. That is it! 0 represents off, and 1 represents on. I showed them the two-minute video on YouTube reference above on binary code, and then I asked them to share with me one thing that they heard in the video.

Then, I told the kids that we were going to write letters and words in binary code. I gave each child the alphabet sheet, and the Binary Coding Sheet and a crayon. Using the alphabet key, I asked them to solve the code, using binary to write out the words on the Coding Sheet. This also only took about 5 minutes.

After they were done, I told them to hang on to their alphabet sheet. I took out the Perler beads, and pipe cleaners. Each child was able to pick what color of pipe cleaner they wanted, and I spooned out some perler beads on small trays on each table. I told the kids to choose two colors of beads. One color would represent 0. The second color would represent the 1. Using their code, the kids wrote out their name in binary code using the beads and the pipe cleaner. When they were done, most of the kids turned their pipe cleaner into a bracelet.

This was an amazing program. I was really impressed how well it turned out. Having the cards and working with the binary code helped the kids realize that the binary code is not very hard to understand. Then, having them write their name using the pipe cleaner and beads allowed them to make a very cool craft. One little girl even made me a crown by coding the first initial of my first name E and the first initial of my last name (Z)!

The whole point of this program was to show kids a tiny taste of binary code, and to show them how it worked so they would not be afraid to do more activities on their own. One student asked for a book on how to create websites from code before he left the library after this program, so I think it worked!

Binary is extremely important to the computer world. The majority of computers today store all sorts of information in binary form. This lesson helps to demonstrate how it is possible to take something that we know and translate it into a series of ons and offs.

This is a great time to review the last lesson that you went through with your class. We suggest you alternate between asking questions of the whole class and having students talk about their answers in small groups.

Finishing the review by asking about the students' favorite things helps to leave a positive impression of the previous exercise, increasing excitement for the activity that you are about to introduce.

You do not need to cover the whole of binary, including counting and converting numbers back and forth from decimal. This lesson is intended to be a fun introduction to how computers store information, not a frustrating lesson in bases.

If your class has extra budget for materials, try doing this exercise using thread (or pipe cleaners) and beads to create the binary bracelets instead of pen and paper. You can provide any combination of two colors in beads to the students, but black and white tend to be easiest, given the way that the key is done.

You may think the computer is the smartest thing in the world, but really computers are just super good at following incredibly specific and detailed instructions.

Every computer is made up of billions of bits. A bit is short for Binary Digits and each bit is read by the computer as either on or off. The on and off values are represented by the numbers 1 and 0. Computers use billions of these sequences to store together complex information.

Bitmap image files are able to store large images by breaking them down into smaller pieces. Bitmaps are composed of a series of small dots called pixels. When looked at up close, a bitmap image might just look like a series of small squares. From afar, however, bitmaps can store complex images.
