Hi everyone!

After the Calagator unconference session at Open Source Bridge, one of the big next steps was to have a work session Sometime Soon. (If you weren't at the unconference session, you can see the meeting notes here: http://opensourcebridge.org/wiki/2014/Calagator)

I'd like to do that! I'd like to propose Sunday, July 20th from 1-5 PM at Portland Code School (NW 18th & Pettygrove). Is anyone interested/available? Maintainer people, will that work for you?

If so, I propose that before then, some goals would be to:
  • File as many issues as possible in as bite-size chunks as possible
  • Tag issues according to likely experience level
At the event, it would be awesome if there were a maintainer/more senior person to do an intro session for new contributors, or more junior contributors that would go over a bit of the history of Calagator, and maybe walk through the code on a fairly in-depth level.

I freely admit that this is a new type of event for me personally, and that I'm the new kid on the block, so counter proposals are strongly encouraged. :)

Hi Shawna,

Thanks for proposing this! I'm tentatively available that day and would be interested in participating, answering questions, and helping people get their bearings.

I'd also like to put out a call for higher-level discussion which might make sense to have before this meeting: a kind of "state of the Calagator", if you will, to talk about where we are with the project and where we're going.

A few things I'd like to discuss:

* What were our goals when Calagator started? What does the Portland community need now?
* How can we make Calagator's UI friendly, responsive, and modern. I'm updating some mockups of my ideas and would welcome discussion and ideas.
* Some potentially-very-useful enhancements exist in divergent forks of Calagator. How can we best integrate these changes?
* How do we make Calagator easy to customize while also keeping things as easy as possible for new contributors?
* What is the current state of the knowledge that a new contributor is likely to have when approaching the project.

Best,
Reid

Sorry for late reply.

I think it would be great to have that discussion, Reid. Is that something you and/or other maintainers want to have first, or would you want others to be involved as well?

What's a good venue, date, and time for that? Maybe a group IRC chat?

I'd be happy to promote July 20th, if there's a consensus about this. If anyone is available that day, even tentatively, please respond here so we can see if there's anyone interested?

I was hoping the 20th would work for me, but it turns out there's a Thorns game at 2.

But if other people are free then, I can catch up later or meet you after. I think a mix of talking about the questions Reid suggested and pair programming or guiding people through ways to contribute could be good.

I'm also available the 19th or the 26th, if that helps. I'm more than happy to be flexible.

The 26th would work well for me.

Ok, Audrey said the 26th would work better, so here's the event: http://calagator.org/events/1250466635
