Xcode 5.1 / Simulator 7.1 / Mavericks 10.9.2 issues

Is anyone able to run tests in Xcode 5.1, Simulator 7.1 and Mavericks 10.9.2 setup?

I am trying to launch calabash-ios-example application from console and here is the output.

I've run on Xcode 5.1 with iOS 7.1 sim, but I was using OS X 10.8.5. I'll look into figuring out if Mavericks is causing problems.

Thanks Karl, I was able to start sample app and test. I just changed wifi connection to another one.

Anyway, the same error still happening very often. In this case I executed sample test successfully two times, closed simulator manually and started test again >> failed

We are aware of this issue and are working on a fix.

As a workaround, go to the Settings.app > General > Accessibility and enable Accessibility Inspector

Just like old times.

I showed that gist to Karl and within 5 minutes he had reproduced the problem and in another 10 he was working on a solution.

Add another person experiencing this issue. 

Unfortunately the Accessibility Inspector didn't help. However my problem seems to be a little different:

I'm able to run my tests in my app as long as the app isn't in focus on the screen of the simulator when I run the test. Though if I run a test while the app is up on the screen, it will close and return to a black screen. I can get out of this by using 'Home' under Hardware at the top. So it looks like it's running. It's just the resetting of the application that's causing the problem.

I updated to sim_launcher 0.4.9. But if I remove version 0.4.6  I get this error:

/Users/me/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p327/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.9.1/rubygems/dependency.rb:247:in `to_specs': Could not find sim_launcher (= 0.4.6) amongst... all my installed gems. If I install 0.4.6 it works but then when I use the SDK_VERSION switch on the command line its not respected. It only starts up iOS 7.1 no matter what value I set.

Danqa - you will need to update your .gemspec file to reflect the new dependency. Also I had to change values in my rvm specifications directory also.

However I did this and still getting a failure to launch even with sim_launcher 0.4.9   :(

I'm about to update from Xcode 5.0.2 to 5.1 and we'll see how it goes.

I've pushed a pre-release:  0.9.168.pre4. 

@Pete - thanks very much for the update and fix. It seems to work here -but I'm getting an error message: xcode-select: Error: unknown command option '-p'. (not yet on Mavericks). I'll see if I can do a pull request. 

Note that for future versions (and this prerelease) when running Xcode 5.1 instruments is always used in favor of sim_launcher. 

@others - the 0.9.168.pre4 supports the new instruments features as well as 64-bit builds (remember to build for the arch you want to test on first, otherwise instruments acts very wierd).

This release supports running all iOS version simulators with instruments. The way this is controlled is a bit verbose: for example

DEVICE_TARGET="iPhone Retina (4-inch 64-bit) - Simulator - iOS 7.1" DEBUG=1 bundle exec calabash-ios console

you can list possible simulator device targets:

instruments -s devices

DEVICE_TARGET="device" is still supported if a single device is connected, otherwise use the device udid.

Known issues: There are still bugs in Apples iOS Simulator when it comes to instruments / UIAutomation. Swipes on table views still don't work on simulator (but it still works on physical device). I've also observed the iOS simulator having problems reacting to system dialogs (like location) - a regression because this definitely worked previously (note from my testing this is a simulator-only issue - this does work on device).

Hi Danqa,

I had the same problem with calabash failing to choose SDK specified in SDK_VERSION evn variable. Updating the "sim_launcher" gem and manually updating the dependency version form 0.4.6 to 0.4.9 in gemspec file for calabash worked and now SDK_VERSION is working again. Hope that helps.

I think as per Krukow's release notes:

168pre4 will try to use Instruments instead of sim_launcher so it might be an Instruments problem. I've downgraded to 167 for the time being.

I did run my test suite on simulator (iPad + few tests on iPhone). Generally speaking everything works awesome.

So far I have noticed only couple of problems related to Accessibility setting and "Accessibility Inspector" window:

1. Need to enable Accessibility from Settings app (mentioned already here)

I did a quick workaround for enabling Accessibility from env.rb:

Workaround above is not perfect since it does not hide 'Accessibility Inspector' window complete, it just minimise it. Let me know if you have better solution.

2. "Accessibility Inspector" window

This window seems to prevent interaction with UI elements if it's floating on top of them. This will happen if you reset simulator content and settings before launching tests.

E.g. in my case window floats on top of the keyboard in iPad and prevents text typing. 'Accessibility Inspector' window is shown only during first scenario. Do you know how to hide it completely?

My impression was that the main purpose of this version (0.9.168) was to eliminate the need to turn on the accessibility inspector at all. 

It seems there are other improvements but the initial problem is not fixed (without either enabling the inspector, or using your workaround).

Has anyone reached a solution that consistently works for this? I was able to enable the Accessibility Inspector via Jani's first script, but the second hasn't been working for me and today I'm seeing button presses automated by calabash that worked prior to the upgrade to XCode 5.1 fail to take effect intermittently with this workaround in place.

I'd really like to use calabash as a common platform for writing both my ios and android tests, but I just can't seem to get calabash iOS to work consistently with XCode 5.1  

Is anyone else seeing button presses fail to take effect with this workaround in place?

We don't have a recommend way yet and are looking at Jani's script.

I am executing the scripts on simulator and observing that its very slow to start. Could this be improved?

Command line i am doing it very simple

It launches the simulator and goes off

Again launches and loads our app.

on the console i see the Background: text that i have given in the feature file.

Stays there for some time( around 15 sec) 

Then the scenario: text shows up and then the execution starts on the simulator.

Myquestion is why it takes 15 sec to start. So every start of scenario its doing this.

I'm using a shell script to do this configuration up front- rather than before each scenario. I didn't want the delay between scenarios (and I'm not resetting the sim between scenarios)

I have been testing 0.9.169 release. When running my complete test set on 7.1 simulator I still see following error very often:

We have tested this pretty thoroughly.

Do you have a local copy of the calabash-cucumber repo?

If so can you try this:

$ cd path/to/local/copy/calabash-ios/calabash-cucumber

$ bundle install

$ bundle exec rake spec

WARNING: This will run the rspec tests which will:

1. tie up your machine for about 5 minutes

2. reset your simulator content and settings (multiple times)

No, I'm not using my solution anymore for enabling accessibility. Project is a real app and unfortunately I can't share it. I will do more testing in coming week but it seems that 7.0 is working fine and problems are only related to 7.1.

The only thing I can think of is that you haven't built (from Xcode) for the specific simulator you are targeting.

I have highlighted the difference that looks suspicious to me

I have no idea why would it use this flag. I have specified ipad as a device properly, I know for sure I have built the app bundle with proper destination flags

Despite the -w flag with iPhone option, it still launches iPad simulator.

There are no iOS devices connected to computer.
