Hi fellow cal 46 Ownwers
My baby is a 1968 original cal cruising 46, powered by Perkins 4.236 with a V drive
Yesterday as the engine was running, I noticed a small stream leak from the bottom of a tall vertical stainless vertical column - exhaust /riser/mixer that connects the exhaust manifold to the mixer up above
And out the transom
The leak is at the base of the pipe where it ends at a corner.
It’s a small stream like a pin prick. it’s where the round end plate end meets the vertical pipe at 90
Degrees. It is welded there
This is where the smaller J shape pipe which then connects this large pipe to the exhaust to the manifold
It’s stainless steel.
One of the head of the 4 bolts that hold the J pipe in place broke off as I was trying to loosen in two years ago
And so this will be a nightmare to remove this big pipe riser mixer exhaust system
My questions is two fold
1) is it possible to just solder this-pin prick hole that’s right at the corner? If so what’s best solder to use?
I’ve read all sorts of solder on Internet: tin-lead , tin-silver
Or just silver which has 1150 melting point- this won’t work since I don’t want to use a propane or acetylene torch
2) can this be replaced? Do they still make these?
If so where
Couple of weeks ago
I tried to descale the entire
Raw-Water system since the water outflow seemed reduced
I let sit inside the hoses , from the raw water (thru Hull) intake all the way to the exhaust, rydlyme solution for 24 hrs
In order to removed all marine growth which clog up the heat Exhanger and transmission and V drive cooling
You think this may have caused this leakage by etching or dissolving the stainless 316?
The leak is pin prick size like a water streaking out of a water ballon, which I think can be covered or patched with a solder gun. But I want a long lasting repair not a band aid fix
Thanks in advance
Edwin
