Hi Bob:Alfred Bloch here of Ariel. Sorry to hear of Aerie's accident. Ariel is a ketch rigged 46 Mark III.
Many years ago we consulted with Bill Lapworth,
about an idea from a dear friend, the late Will Bassett. Will had added a staysail to Chardonnay, his sloop rigged 2-46, and was very pleased with the improvement in sail plan.
Lapworth liked the idea for Ariel. But, since the mast was being replaced by an internal furling mast, that we raise the mast by 5' because we would lose sail area in giving up the roach. He feared any more height than that would make the boat 'tippy' (Bill's words). There was careful deck bracing for the staysail, and we added running backstays for use of the staysail in heavy weather.
Ariel has sailed three times N from Marina Del Rey to British Columbia and twice S to Manzanillo and up into the Sea of Cortez. We also have an internal furling mizzenmast, the main function of which is to carry the radar. The staysail adds greatly to sailing flexibility, and she points higher than when sloop rigged. The added mast height makes up for the lost roach. We love our internal furling masts. Our son, Dirk Stoehr, now owns Ariel, and she is lovelier than ever. She just won opening day prizes at the California Yacht Club, where she has been berthed many years. Please arrange for a visit to see Ariel if you can.Alfred Bloch, MDS/V Arielcc: Dirk StoehrOn Fri, Apr 21, 2017 at 9:02 AM 'Robert Aerie' via cal46 <ca...@googlegroups.com> wrote:
Hi allI recently lost the rig on my Cal 3-46 due to a collision. Does anyone know of or have a rig plan for a Cal 46? Both Cal 2-46 and 3-46 sloop and ketch have same main mast. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!Bob StaniecSV Aerie

I doubt this helps much, but here’s the original owner’s manual.
