Hello Fellow Cal 46 ownersWith regards to using the Perkins diesel 4.236Engine (mine is a 1968 model ) to heat waterHas anyone tried to connect the engine of the Perkins 4.236To the raritan water heater ? As most newerBoats have pre installedThe engine runs at 180 FahrenheitAnd I believe the raritan electric water heater is set to 110 to 120 F or somewhere there a-boutsI’ve search the internet and have not found good diagrams for this older Perkins as far as where to connect the inflow and the outflowAnd I’m also concerned about galvanic corrosion if I connect brass valves to the engine block, not to mention someonePossibly getting scalded with very hot waterOr a hose rupture which can cause a mess in the Aft engine roomWould appreciate any thought commentsPictures advises etcThe only way for me to heat my water at this time while on a mooring is to run the GensetAnd turn it on (110V AC)Thanks in advanceEdwinCal cruising 46 (hull 5. 1968)Sent from my iPhoneOn Dec 16, 2021, at 9:26 AM, Andy Neilson <relaxin...@gmail.com> wrote:I replaced the dry stack exhaust with a water lift. We upgraded when we repowered, but a standard exhaust elbow into a vetus lift muffler into a vetus water separator, and out the side of the hull right inside the engine room worked great.
The long exhaust hose out the transom can collapse and cause it’s own horrible problems, too.

Subject: [cal46] Bypassing the tube in a tube exhaust
Hi fellow sailors
Hull 5 original Cal Cruising 46
Came with Perkins diesel 4.236
Exhaust manifold consisted of seawater outflow going
Inside a vertical tube which itself has a tube for the dry exhaust
Up at the top the two separate out and combine up at the mixer
I was advised a better system would be to bypass the tube in a tube system and bring seawater outflow separately and connect it to mixer directly using a rubber hose
Has anyone done this?

Thx for that Phil
Something to consider
Speaking of repower
Did you use the same Perkins or a turbo Yanmar And how did they take the engine out? Cut the deck ?
I have a V drive since my Perkins sits in the back

Hi KevinI’ve had my Cal Cruising 46 (hull no 5 1968 year built ) for 16 years now, home port here in marina del Rey CAIn my first haul out three years (13 years ago) after purchaseThere were a lot of blisters-like chicken poxThey did the work-grounded out each one and filled with microballons and fairedThat was 13 years agoSubsequent bottom painting and haul outs every 4 years or soVery minimal blistering - very satisfyingThe base solid fiberglass epoxy is solid and intact. No water intrusion nor any moistureThe blisters were superficial and did not affect the strength and integrity of the thick solid fiberglass hullWe used Trinidad 70% Cooper anti foulingPaint- two layers and three at the waters edgeFrom what I’m told blistering is also affected by water temp and different marinas-sea water- affect blister formationSo no I would not Nuke the problem unless your situation is critical and unbearableGood luckEdwinS/V LahliaCal Cruising 46Sent from my iPhone
