Hello cal yachts family

I’d like to install a whisker pole on my hull 5

Original cruising 46

Unfortunately the yacht came with a low set

Furuno radar (which works great)

So that limits the length

I’d like to install a tract along with the pole for down wind sailing

Would appreciate any tips pictures
And advise

Thanks in advance

Hello Fellow Cal 46 owners

With regards to using the Perkins diesel 4.236

Engine (mine is a 1968 model ) to heat water

Has anyone tried to connect the engine of the Perkins 4.236

To the raritan water heater ? As most newer

Boats have pre installed

The engine runs at 180 Fahrenheit

And I believe the raritan electric water heater is set to 110 to 120 F or somewhere there a-bouts

I’ve search the internet and have not found good diagrams for this older Perkins as far as where to connect the inflow and the outflow

And I’m also concerned about galvanic corrosion if I connect brass valves to the engine block, not to mention someone
Possibly getting scalded with very hot water
Or a hose rupture which can cause a mess in the Aft engine room

Would appreciate any thought comments
Pictures advises  etc

The only way for me to heat my water at this time while on a mooring is to run the Genset
And turn it on (110V AC)

Thanks in advance

I replaced the dry stack exhaust with a water lift.  It connects up with the old hose that does out the transom. Been working great about 10 years.

And also getting the word out that I’m selling my 1976 Cal 2-46, Twisted Journey. Repower, new mast and sails, and electronics., etc…

We upgraded when we repowered, but a standard exhaust elbow into a vetus lift muffler into a vetus water separator, and out the side of the hull right inside the engine room worked great.

The long exhaust hose out the transom can collapse and cause it’s own horrible problems, too.

Subject: [cal46] Bypassing the tube in a tube exhaust

Hi fellow sailors

Hull 5 original Cal Cruising 46
Came with Perkins diesel 4.236

Exhaust manifold consisted of seawater outflow going
Inside a vertical tube which itself has a tube for the dry exhaust
Up at the top the two separate out and combine up at the mixer

I was advised a better system would be to bypass the tube in a tube system and bring seawater outflow separately and connect it to mixer directly using a rubber hose

Has anyone done this?

Thx for that Phil
Something to consider

Speaking of repower

Did you use the same Perkins or a turbo Yanmar And how did they take the engine out? Cut the deck ?

I have a V drive since my Perkins sits in the back

Hi Kevin
I’ve had my Cal Cruising 46 (hull no 5 1968 year built ) for 16 years now, home port here in marina del Rey CA

In my first haul out three years (13 years ago) after purchase
There were a lot of blisters-like chicken pox

They did the work-grounded out each one and filled with microballons and faired

That was 13 years ago

Subsequent bottom painting and haul outs every 4 years or so

Very minimal blistering - very satisfying

The base solid fiberglass epoxy is solid and intact. No water intrusion nor any moisture

The blisters were superficial and did not affect the strength and integrity of the thick solid fiberglass hull

We used Trinidad 70% Cooper anti fouling
Paint- two layers and three at the waters edge

From what I’m told blistering is also affected by water temp and different marinas-sea water- affect blister formation

So no I would not Nuke the problem unless your situation is critical and unbearable

Good luck

Edwin
