I’m curious what others experience with the “good old Perkins”
I’ve been using Shell Rotella T4 15-40 at oil.
My engine is original as far as I know has never been rebuild. The hours are unknown as the meter didn’t work when I bought Dulce Sueno but it works now and reads just over 2000 hrs
The engine is quick to start and runs strong without significant smoke. My oil pressure is good, 25 at 600rpm, 55 psi at 1700 rpm
Consumption seems a bit high at 1 quart per 30 hrs approximately.
Please share how your engine runs, if it has been rebuild, what is your oil of choice, what is pressure and oil consumption like?
Thanks
Nick

I’ve been told by many boat mechanics for old diesel best to use the thickest oil

I have a Cal 46
Built in 1968 with original Perkins 4.236
To my knowledge hasn’t been rebuilt

Runs great starts right away
No funny smoke smooth doesn't over heat

I use delo 400

It’s straight 40

I qt at 30 hrs is excellent and normal

Unusually add maybe less than a pint after 10 hrs of motor sailing

You can have the piston rings replaced
For $$$

Cheaper to just add oil now and then

Also running at 60-70% max RPM will reduce

Oil consumption

Pacifica has the original "Good old Perkins"  I have no Idea the hours as the clock had stopped before I came aboard. My first experience I ran from Vancover to Squamish a run of about 30 miles. Being new to the boat I pushed it probably ran about 2000 RPM and to my horror burned nearly 2 liters of oil. I spoke with the PO and he told me slow down run at the "Sweet spot" which I have found is 1490-1550 RPM Now I burn a liter in 30 hours. So I don't evr make the hul speed of 8+ knots but rather a conservative 6 knots.
I have been using 15-40 diesel oil form Canadian tire and I add dose of an additive recommended by my mechanic. something like slick 50.
She starts with the slights push of the starter and sounds good.
Project for next year is to replace ALL the hoses which are original. Keep fingers crossed.
two years ago had to replace the exhaust hose out the transom. Sure made a smokey wet mess when it split under the aft bunk. Thay god I had a bunch of glass cloth and a liter of epoxy. Limped backl from Desolation sound.

I love my Perkins!

They’re great engines

Yes burning 1 liter of oil at max rpm (2000)

Is not unheard of

I have the same issue with my 50 year old

Original un rebuilt Perkins 4.236

But if I run it at 1600 rpm I’d need maybe

A half a pint after 12 hrs

Runs great

Yes you can put in new piston rings

For $$$$

Cheaper to juts carry oil and run at sweet

Spot

I must be lucky!

Wanderlust's 4.236 is at around 2000 hours after its last rebuild, and doesn't burn any oil at all.  Motored approximately 30 hours over the past month, and the oil level's at the same place on the dipstick I filled it up to.

I just use whatever diesel-grade 15w40 is on sale, and change every 100 hours.  I honestly don't think it makes a difference for our engines; they're not running 7000rpm like a race car. :)

I do have temperature alarms though and have never cooked the engine.  I think that's a big one.  I normally run at 1350rpm (6 1/2 knots, give or take).

I have a 50+ year Perkins 4.236

If I run at 1350 RPM

I won’t need to add oil at all

Well maybe just under a pint after 50 hrs so so
