Cool Campus Challenge

April 1 - April 26

Berkeley students, staff, and faculty are taking action at home and around the globe to reduce our own carbon footprint and find real and lasting solutions to climate disruption. Our collective actions - saving energy, walking and riding bikes, choosing solar power, eating plant-forward, and more - reduce millions of pounds of carbon emissions each year.

And, Berkeley is ready to do even more this April in the Cool Campus Challenge. Get ready for a friendly on-line competition between the UC campuses to determine which UC pledges to reduce the most carbon pollution! Learn more and sign up: www.coolcampuschallenge.org

Berkeley leads the way with a commitment to 100% clean energy

David Blackwell Residence Hall gets LEED GOLD Rating

UC Berkeley's newest housing project reaches LEED Gold Certification through a variety of sustainable features, with a focus on reducing energy consumption. Blackwell Hall consumes 44% less energy than required by the stringent local code, and is performing 70% better than similar buildings in the same climate. Energy saving features: air conditioning provided only in shared, communal spaces; residential units are served by low velocity, tempered ventilation - augmented by operable windows and supplemented by individually controlled electric radiant modules over the windows. Additionally, responsive lighting throughout adjusts in brightness according to the amount of natural light infiltrating the building at different points in the day.
