I just bought Cakewalk ProAudio 8 and want to run it on my laptop,
sending MIDI out the serial port to a Yamaha QY70 which I'm using as a
passive sound generator. I've got the right serial cable and have set
the QY70 to "PC2" as instructed in the manual -- but I don't seem to be
sending any MIDI data out the serial port. Any suggestions -- I'm sure
I'm missing something REALLY simple.

Thanks in advance --

You don't mention what serial port MIDI driver you're using.
Presumably you are using the one supplied by Yamaha? If not,
then that's what's missing. You should be able to download
the latest version from Yamaha's website.

Thanks Mark -- I got the driver from Yamaha's web page and installed
it. I've got a "MIDI out" indicator light when I playback in
Cakewalk. I've set the QY70's MIDI Utility settings to MIDI Sync --
External, MIDI Control -- In/Out (also tried In only), EchoBack --
Thru, Local On/Off -- On (also tried Off), MIDI Filter -- off, Patt
Out -- off, XG -- off...... and still get no sound. Any suggestions?

Charlie,
Remember that only the Midi data is going out of the serial port
connection, not audio. You will need to have speakers connected to the QY to
hear it's sounds.

Make sure you can get Midi files (.mid) to playback using the Windows Media
Player program.

Here's a few things to check...
1. Midi Cables.
2. The Installation and Basic Tutorial sections of the Cakewalk User's
Guide (version 6), or the Introduction and Troubleshooting sections (version
7.0).
3. Confirm you have the latest drivers for your Interface and that they are
not conflicting with any other devices on the system.
4. The windows/sound card mixer utility to make sure you have selected and
turned up the proper faders.
5. In Cakewalk, confirm that you have selected the proper ports for input
and output in the Midi Devices window under the Settings(6.0)/Tools(7.0)
menu.
6. That the windows program "Media Player" can playback .mid files (if it
cannot, check with the manufacturer of your sound card/Interface).

Thank You,
