Core translations

Hi,

I see we are now accepting translations for the core messages (core and core_dev po's) in the localized plugin. I was thinking if we can switch that part to a more friendly system, web based.

https://www.transifex.com is a company that accepts to import pot and export po files and probably easier to contribute and review the translations. Also, they support open source projects, with big open projects.

If we want to keep the plugin updated, we can setup a job in jenkins to frequently update the translations in the repo based on the web system.

Thoughts?

Transifex seems to be a great tool, I had good feedbacks from several Django developers. There already are many open source projects using it too.

I did an import today from all languages from localized repo into transifex: https://www.transifex.com/projects/p/cakephp/

I don't know if some of the translations is locale specific (specific for one country). I know the portuguese translation is localized for Brazil.

Good call.

However, one thing that I immediately  find to be sub-optimal is that you need to be approved before you can suggest an edit. It's not like "fork, edit, push, pull request [, review, merge]" which anyone can do at any time; there's a delay before you can start where a new translator needs to be granted permission/access. There doesn't appear to be any middle ground in the admin section of this site between "free for all" and "Limited access".. I wonder if it might be worth using "free for all" until there is a problem (or significant activity) to remove this barrier to entry - for the most part approving new team members is going to be a token gesture anyway (i.e. it's not like anyone is going to actively check that joe schmoe really can speak italian before accepting their request to join the Italian team)

I agree with you. I am not specialist with transifex, but I have seeing some projects which you can contrib like you said.

I changed the project permission from "permissive open-source" to "other open-source". Maybe this is the config to allow people to contrib without approval. I couldn't find in the help what is the different types or how change permissions.

I am in my tablet, in about 1 hour I should be in the computer and I will do some tests for that.

Might make sense to ask them if they will be supporting this in the future, or if there is a paid version that allows a github-style interaction. If it's within our price range and we also see enough uptake, it might be worth doing so.

Sorry. I forgot to give updates on this thread.

With AD* and euromark help I changed the config on transifex and anyone can contrib now without approval. The only thing that requires approval is to create a new locale.

So far we received 2 new language requests and they are translated :-)

I will get some time to update the readme on the repo and create the jenkins job to frequently update it, if everyone agree.

Euromark's plugin is a very piece of cake. I used and it imports all the things very quickly.

I could be wrong though.

I tried it myself and It looks really promissing.

Because of this I currently don't invest any time in setting up an environment with oTranCe.
If it gets on the table again, I can help though.
