Hello again,

I would like to update everyone on the status of the next GNO.NET meeting.  As you all must know by now, next Tuesday the 12th we are having Ted Neward in town!  After a heavy paced session of voting on the subject Ted himself cast the tie-breaking vote.

So the topic will be:
Pragmatic Architecture
Building an application is not the straightforward exercise it used to be. Decisions regarding which programming languages to use (Java, .NET, even FoxPro), which architectural approaches to take (n-tier, client/server), which user interface approaches to take (Smart/rich client, thin client, Ajax), even how to communicate between processes (Web services, distributed objects, REST)... it's enough to drive the most dedicated designer nuts. This talk discusses the goals of an application architecture and why developers should concern themselves with architecture in the first place. Then, it dives into the meat of the various architectural considerations available; the pros and cons of JavaWebStart, ClickOnce, Windows Presentation Foundation, SWT, Swing, WinForms, Struts, WebForms, Ajax, RMI, .NET Remoting, JAX-WS, ASMX, Windows Communication Foundation, Windows Workflow Foundation, JMS, MSMQ, transactional processing, and more. After that, the basic architectural discussion from the first part is, with the aid of the audience in a more interactive workshop style, applied to a real-world problem, discussing the performance and scalability ramifications of the various communication options, user interface options, and more. (For any intermediate audience, recommended as a keynote or a half-day or full-day tutorial.)

In case you are not aware of Ted, he is a speaker, author, and developerin the .NET, Java, and functional language space.  He is the principal of Neward & Associates Consulting, Microsoft MVP, BEA Technical Director, INETA speaker, and writes the back-page article in CODE magazine.

Honestly guys, this is a big deal, you should certainly make an attempt to come.

The food at this meeting will be sponsored by Strategic Staffing Solutions and the room, as always, provided by New Horizons so give a big thanks to Candice and Tiffany if you see them.

In other news, Ted will also speaking that Wednesday January the 13th at the Baton Rouge usergroup.  For those of you who voted for Scripting in .NET apps - that is the topic they have chosen so go!  Check it out!

In addition, gnocode will be meeting Wednesday 20th to discuss iPhone development with Chris van Buskirk of Calliope Digital

I also need help getting the website up and running.  I created a prototype using SharpArchitecure and just don't have time to finish and push it out so if you're interested in MVC, NHivernate, Castle Windsor, JQuery, and the ALT.NET lifestyle in general please take this project over.

Finally, we are solidifying the schedule for the coming year, I will be announcing it at our next meeting but we've got some really exciting speakers on really interesting subjects.

So come, bring a friend, and if you have not RSVPed yet, please let me know so that I can make sure we have enough food.

Thanks a lot,
George Mauer
