Gladiatorswas a must-watch Saturday tea-time show in 1992 and it lasted for 8 years. It made a brief comeback in 2008 and fans have had to wait for 16 years to see the show again. It features a brand new cast of athletes and it's one of the best shows on TV! But which of the gladiatorial team are you most like? Are you like Wolf or Jet from the original show, or are you one of the newcomers to this highly-competitive series?

For all those swords and sandals movie lovers out there, it doesn't get too much better than Russell Crowe's Gladiator. The action epic is full to the brim of blood, violence, love, betrayal, revenge and redemption - in short, it has it all in this almost three hour long epic.

Insight to the lives of slaves fighting within the gladiator pits in Roman culture is not an uncommon theme in other movies focused on the same historical period, so it was always going to take something special for this movie to stand out from the crowd already including the likes of Spartacus and Ben-Hur.

But boy did it easily take the top spot for best gladiator movie of all time, taking home many awards and pretty much universal critical acclaim. It was so successful, in fact, that we almost got a sequel also starring Crowe as a revived (and time travelling) Maximus. The mind boggles.

But, for those who have experienced Millionaire, the Clarkson face-off is the last round in a long process. And perhaps one of the most under-sung aspects of the show, and certainly its most ruthlessly competitive, is the fastest-finger-first round, in which contestants compete for the opportunity to play for money by being the fastest to correctly order four options, hitting buttons on a keypad. Of six contestants per episode, only a maximum of three make it into the chair. The most likely outcome is that you go home with your travel expenses in a brown paper envelope. Millionaire is, like most TV quizzes, a game of chance, jeopardy structural to its success.

It represents the perfect distillation of the quiz form that was honed over the 20th century. The whistle-stop history is that it transferred from radio to TV in the early 20th century, with the first quizzes being BBC spelling contests for school children. Unconstrained by such Reithian ideals, the commercial US market rapidly developed new formats geared towards prizes which, with the creation of ITV in 1955, were copied over here. The $64,000 Question, adapted for the British as The 64,000 Question, crossed the Atlantic in the Fifties, awarding a carefully rationed top prize of 64,000 sixpences.

Postwar consumerism, of course, is the economic base to this cultural superstructure. Goods and cash have not only formed prizes, but also the content of the knowledge required. Think of the memorisation conveyor-belt round in The Generation Game or the explicit consumer-good valuation games Sale of the Century and The Price is Right. As this indicates, one key to the success of the quiz format is its ability to hybridise, most obviously by combining the requirement for knowledge with elements of chance, but also with other, more atavistic forms of competition. Take The Krypton Factor, which required contestants to be able to complete assault courses and challenges of co-ordination as well as answering questions. Or Blind Date which, despite its entertainment window-dressing, was a competition for a partner. Should we ignore the evolutionary resonance? I think not.

The quiz show viewer can mock the contestant, participate in the quiz with none of the jeopardy, or even roll the dice themselves. Without even leaving the comfort of their sofa, they can text to enter one of the many prize lotteries that proliferate around ITV quizzes. Because what is being a participant in late-capitalism other than taking part in an astronomically high-odds lottery? Perhaps they might even sign up for a 3000:1 chance of participating in the spectacle of Millionaire, momentarily seizing for themselves the means of information.

And since our last post implementing a quiz did really well, and provided a lot of interesting insight and conversations in the comments, we figured it was time to continue the trend, and see who can score 100% on our expert-level quiz regarding RED Cameras.

Hoplomachus. They were believed to represent Greek hoptiles which is where they derived the name from. Usually represented as an enemy, they wore a heavy set of armor and utilized a spear as their main weapon.

The armies of Rome swept over Italy and the known world and were triumphant wherever they went. Yet Rome was cosmopolitan; she brought to Italy the culture, the treasures, the entertainments, the religions, and philosophies of the world. In such an atmosphere even the exotic became commonplace, while the search for new pleasures and sensations was the order of day. - Jack Randolph Conrad, The Arenas of Rome, The Horn and the Sword

The images in these friezes appear to portray an era before Augustus instituted certain changes in the ludi, gladiator schools, and the style of gladiators armor and weaponry.

For example, in an article that appears in, Archeology magazine, Anna Maria Moretti, superintendent of archaeology in Rome says, "Except for one who sports a crested helmet, the Fiano Romano gladiators all wear basic helmets that are essentially skull caps with cheek flaps. All are bare-chested, but wear the subligaculum, or loincloth, and a heavy belt or balteus, from which they hung their swords. Two figures have full-length metal shin guards, ocreae, while the others have bands around their calf muscles to which metal plates are attached. Large shields are depicted both rectangular with a curved border and oval with a central boss and rib, as is a parmula, a small, round Thracian shield. Some gladiators carry short swords with straight, sturdy blades, while others are armed with the sica, a heavy curved dagger.... A fragmentary inscription recovered with the gladiator panels reveals that the tomb was likely for one "Rius, son of Marcus" [Rius Marci filius] who wanted to be remembered for his generosity in sponsoring games."ARCHEOLOGY MAGAZINE

Tradition has it the houses of a star chart, aka departments of life, are associated with the professional gladiator and unwilling participant in the arena. The First House aka Rising Sign or Ascendant, with the emphasis on the strength and stamina of Mars, is part of Gladiator's [Russell Crowe] persona. The three fire sign houses, First, Fifth, and Ninth, are directly linked to the 'tripple warmer' or 'the strong right arm' as in the Conan movies. The Fourth House, if linked with the First House, suggests strong defense strategy on other dimensional levels [usually the astrosome, as in The Matrix].The Third House of The Twins, ancient patrons of the Olympic games, often indicates hand-eye coordination, required for success in baseball, football, and tennis. The Fifth House of an arena, or competition in the open, describes all games dedicated to Apollo and Hercules. The first Olympic games were organized by the Ancient Oracle at Delphi and devotees of Ceres, and featured cerebral matches such as contests in poetry and drama; they are researched as offshoots of Virgo and the Sixth House. The Seventh House of The Charioteer [Ben-Hur] is depicted in the symbolism of Trump VII The Conqueror or The Chariot. The Eighth House [linked to the Sixth] governs initiation, fencing class, ancient gladiatorial schools, and enclosed contests, such as the 'death match' in Thunderdome [Mad Max character]. The Ninth House of professional sports usually indicates a universal athlete as does the Eleventh House of the Promethean gladiator. The Twelfth House, also associated with the arena, is usually linked to religious suffering in the early years of the Piscean Era.aura of wrestler turned stock broker
