The Social Media Lab at Ted Rogers School of Management in Toronto, Canada is seeking a highly motivated and creative Postdoctoral Researcher to contribute to a Canada Research Chair-funded initiative on the adoption and use of blockchain-based social media sites, with the broad goal of understanding their potential as disruptors in the social media space and their role in addressing users’ privacy and data ownership concerns.

The Opportunity

Applicants must have demonstrable expertise in using survey and interview-based methods to collect data about social media use and users. In addition, applicants must also have a strong background in qualitative and quantitative approaches to analyzing self-reported data.

The position will be for a period of one year with a preferred start date in January of 2022. The salary is $50-60k CAD per annum (based on experience) plus a comprehensive benefits package.

The successful candidate will be a member of the Social Media Lab, headed by co-directors Dr. Anatoliy Gruzd, Canada Research Chair and Professor at the Ted Rogers School of Management and Philip Mai, Director of Business and Communications. The researcher must be available to work onsite at the Social Media Lab in Toronto, Canada.


The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to collaborate actively with all team members and contribute to the intellectual life of the lab. The successful candidate responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • collecting and analyzing self-reported data about social media use and users,
  • contributing substantially to various projects and related tasks as they arise,
  • communicating regularly with the project team,
  • participating in the knowledge management and translation of the lab’s research via journal/conference publications, the lab’s website and various social media channels.


  • A doctorate in one of the following areas: Information Science, Information Systems, Communication, Digital Sociology, Social Sciences or a related field;
  • Demonstrable expertise in (1) designing and evaluating survey/interview protocols, and (2) collecting and analyzing self-reported data using both qualitative and quantitative approaches;
  • Familiarity with scholarly literature and relevant theories related to the adoption and use of social media and other disruptive technologies;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English;
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively;

The Social Media Lab is an internationally engaged interdisciplinary research laboratory at the Ted Rogers School of Management in Toronto, Canada. The lab studies how social media is changing the ways in which people and organizations communicate, disseminate information, conduct business and form communities online, and how these changes impact society. The aim of the lab’s various research initiatives is to advance the public’s understanding of the benefits and pitfalls of social media adoption.
