Let's just take a look at the first line: "Draft Day, Johnny Manziel." Oh boy. Listen, in the spring of 2014 when this song dropped and my Cleveland Browns drafted Johnny, you really couldn't tell me shit. The song was on repeat. I popped champagne on Draft night. Johnny was a force in college. I'm not sure I've seen a better performance than what he did on the road against Alabama in 2012.
Now, it isn't Drake's fault that this happened. He rapped about his friend getting drafted. All love. But man, Manziel's NFL career couldn't have ended up worse. Some say this was the true beginning of the Drake curse. And folks, it's hard to argue with that one!
Everyone around Maye knows what awaits him this season as one of the top prospects in the 2024 NFL draft. It is why coach Mack Brown made sure to consult Maye when hiring a new offensive coordinator, why Brown brought in multiple offensive assistants with NFL coaching experience, why Brown has done everything he could think of to ensure Maye will succeed given the stakes.
So yes, it is understandable why Maye feels less pressure going into this year -- even amidst NFL draft expectations that start with him being taken No. 3 overall in the first mock draft from ESPN's Todd McShay. Maye has already proved to himself, his coaches and teammates he can put in the work and perform at an extremely high level. The fun part is next -- improving enough to not only cement his spot as one of the top quarterbacks in college football but take his team further than the ACC championship game.
Maye will be without his top two receivers from last season, Antoine Green and Josh Downs, both drafted by the NFL. But the Tar Heels brought in two transfers in Tez Walker and Nate McCollum, who both impressed during spring practice. The Tar Heels also return two tight ends to play a factor in the passing game in Kamari Morales and Bryson Nesbit.
There are other Atlanta-area Black players taken in the past two drafts, too, including the offspring of a pair of former major leaguers. Druw Jones, the son of legendary Braves center fielder Andruw Jones, was the second selection of the 2022 draft out of Wesleyan School in suburban Atlanta, and Cam Collier, the son of Lou Collier, was the 18th pick in that draft by the Reds. Collier attended Mount Paran Christian School in nearby Kennesaw, Georgia, getting his GED following his sophomore year, then playing one year at Chipola College in Florida.
Although the percentage of U.S.-born Black players on MLB rosters is lower than ever, MLB is encouraged that in the first round of the past 10 drafts, about 19 percent of players selected were Black and U.S.-born, many of whom participated in development programs run by MLB. The programs are free, and MLB puts together teams that play in Perfect Game and other showcase events.
Harris influencing young players points to what Reagins said is among the contributing factors in the way grassroots efforts increase participation among young Black players. They see kids like them being drafted, players they know or competed against. And some of those players are rising quickly through minor-league systems, compared to the five or six years that it routinely took for high school-drafted players to make it through a minor-league system not long ago.
Maye is a contender to be the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, and his decision to declare sets the stage for a potential monthslong debate for that spot. USC quarterback Caleb Williams has not declared his intentions for 2024 but has also made clear he's not playing in the postseason.
Maye said he took a philosophy final Monday afternoon, and he's gradually getting ready for the next phase of his career -- preparing for the draft. He plans to show teams what type of player, competitor and person they'd be getting.
"First off, moving on from college and getting back into workout mode and really just learning the steps of preparing the NFL draft," Maye said of the upcoming weeks. "Not only physically but mentally. Playing quarterback in the NFL is a mental game. I want to show the NFL not only my competitive edge, but that I'm a winner and a leader and I'm ready to take on a franchise."
The drumbeat of debate between Maye and Williams began long before this college season and could end up extending to draft night. As of now, the Chicago Bears have the top pick via a trade with the Carolina Panthers, who have the league's worst record. The New England Patriots are slotted No. 2 at 3-10 and have an easier strength of schedule than the Arizona Cardinals, who are also 3-10.
"We've never battled with our teams on the field," Maye said. "The media has put a battle between our playing. He's a great player and a good friend of mine, but I'm trying to prove that I can be the best quarterback in this draft."
"In most drafts, he'd go No. 1," the executive said. "His skill set reminds me of Eli Manning coming out of college. He's a pure, smooth pocket passer who has a great release. He'll fit in an offense based on timing and three-step and five-step drops and throwing the ball to spots, a franchise where ball placement and timing is put at a premium."
At 2-9, the Patriots are in comfortable position to land a top-three pick in the draft, with a chance to finish in the top two and a remote shot of getting the No. 1 overall pick. We don't know with confidence who will be making that pick for the team, as there remains some healthy skepticism that Bill Belichick will remain with the Patriots after this season.
"With their quarterback situation in shambles, the Patriots have a bottom-five offense," Brugler wrote. "In his 24 years as head coach in New England, Bill Belichick has never drafted in the top five, but this season is certainly trending in that direction. That's the bad news. The good news? This is a great draft for a quarterback-needy team to own an early pick. Maye is a young player and not without his faults, but he has promising talent and more big-time throws on his tape than any other passer in this class."
Mock drafting, like the actual draft itself, is an inexact science. And with plenty of games left that scramble up the draft order, it's impossible to predict where and how everything will be sorted out in the coming six weeks. So if the Patriots go on an unlikely winning streak, these other four quarterbacks all appeared in various spots in the mock drafts.
With a quarter of the NFL officially eliminated from playoff contention and even more teams with minimal chance to make the postseason, we thought it was a good time to use the final 2023 edition of The Overhang as our next 2024 NFL mock draft.
The Sam Howell experiment had its highs, its lows and its sacks. A lot of sacks. The Commanders race to the podium to turn in the card for Williams, who, despite some uneven moments in his final season at USC, still has too much talent and playmaking ability to not take high in the draft.
Either way, the Chargers' defense definitely needs help at all three levels. But with this being such an offensive-heavy draft, at least at the top of the first round, keeping the franchise quarterback upright and healthy takes precedence over reaching for a need.
While I know plenty of fantasy players and lovers of running jokes into the ground (usually the same people) will be screaming about giving Arthur Smith another highly drafted offensive weapon, Thomas would fit in perfectly with what the Falcons currently have. Thomas has great size (listed 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds) and is a very good athlete and fluid mover despite his frame. He can take the top off defenses but he is not a vertical-only stiff. His route running improved throughout the year and he started to show more branches to his route tree, with the bend and footwork of a much smaller player. He consistently wins on breaking routes from the outside, with the hands to finish the play. Thomas already shows the makings of a true X receiver at the next level, and should get only better.
After taking Jaire Alexander in the first round in 2018 and Eric Stokes in the opening round of the 2021 draft, the Packers take a cornerback in the first round again to continue the three-year cycle.
In this mock draft timeline, Brian Flores returns as Vikings defensive coordinator. DeJean, an incredibly versatile defender with outstanding athleticism, stays in Big Ten country and joins in on the blitzing and shifting coverage fun.
The Rams still have Aaron Donald, but their defense has punched far above its weight in 2023. General manager Les Snead nailed several draft picks on defense with linebacker Byron Young and nose tackle Kobie Turner both playing well as rookies.
Guyton has a giant frame and the ability to play at both tackle spots. He is a plus-athlete and could make for a formidable left side with star left guard Tyler Smith. Grabbing another interior offensive lineman later in the draft, preferably a center or Zack Martin successor, could help quickly refresh this Cowboys offensive line for the future.
Welcome back to “know your draft crush.” As I do every year, we’re examining a whole position group that the Chiefs appear likely to attack in the draft. This year, I’ve picked wide receivers (with perhaps a side of edge rushers).
These were the names brought to me most often from what I can tell, so they’re the ones I chose. If you’re looking for other draft resources, you should check out my friend Ryan Tracy’s Athletic Matrix, the good folk over at KCSN and their draft guide, Dane Brugler’s legendary “Beast,” or the people over at The Draft Network.
The discussion draft is meant to lay out general principles of what the lawmakers think legislation on the issue ought to look like, while also serving as a call for feedback, said a person with knowledge of the draft text who was not authorized to speak publicly. The individual added that the legislators aim to introduce a bill based on the draft language in the coming months.
