Sample iPython notebooks on macOS Sierra crash when shelling out

I built caffe 1.0.0-rc3 and pycaffe for CPU per the instructions. My issues building for GPU will be in another post.

Command-line brewing works fine. Jupyter notebooks run, but whenever I get to a cell that shells out, Python crashes.

I am not using Anaconda -- I installed all the Python packages with brew, easy_install, or pip. I did not clear out my brew directories as I also use TensorFlow and MXNet.

Is this reproducible elsewhere, or have I somehow messed up the pycaffe build?
