How to generate validation (val) files

I'm new to caffe and I'm trying to generate my own training set based on the instructions below.

I can't get imagenet data directly since I'm not a researcher, but I have have downloaded the training data via the URLs, but don't know what the val files are or how to generate them.  Would appreciate any help.

It says:

We assume that you already have downloaded the ImageNet training data and validation data, and they are stored on your disk like:

/path/to/imagenet/train/n01440764/n01440764_10026.JPEG
/path/to/imagenet/val/ILSVRC2012_val_00000001.JPEG

I was able to get a valid caffemodel by copying my lmdb train files and renaming them for testing.  Not sure if this is the best way to do it, but it seemed to work.
